Logo Design Checklist — Applied to the ANRC Emblem
A one-page reference: the do's/don'ts on the left, how the Amhara National Regional Council mark scores on each, on the right.
1. Simplicity — "describe it in one sentence, redraw from memory"
Do: Keep the core idea to one clear concept. ANRC result: ⚠️ Partial. The concept (assembly hall + tower + gavel + lake + sunburst) is coherent but stacks five distinct elements — more than most seals carry. A viewer would struggle to sketch it from memory beyond "circle with buildings and water."
2. Vector-only, no baked-in photorealism
Do: Build the master file entirely in vector; avoid gradients/glass textures as core elements. Don't: Mix photoreal rendering with flat vector. ANRC result: ❌ Fails. This is the single biggest issue — the buildings use soft 3D-style gradients and glass reflections, while the ring and type are flat vector. Two rendering languages in one mark.
3. Scalability (16px favicon → large banner)
Do: Test at extreme sizes before finalizing. ANRC result: ❌ Fails. The gradient detail and dotted window lights on the dome will collapse into noise at favicon or ID-badge size.
4. Works in single color / black & white
Do: Confirm the mark still reads with no color at all. ANRC result: ❌ Likely fails. Much of the form definition currently comes from gradient shading rather than clean silhouettes — remove color and the buildings may lose most of their legibility.
5. Deliberate typography
Do: Choose or customize a typeface; avoid default system fonts. ANRC result: ⚠️ Weak. The English wordmark uses a generic serif with no custom treatment — functional, but not distinctive.
6. Every symbol earns its place
Do: Cut decoration that isn't carrying meaning. ANRC result: ⚠️ Mixed. Each element does map to a concept (governance, law, place), so nothing is purely decorative — but the gavel, the most legally meaningful symbol, is under-weighted and easy to miss.
7. Optical balance, not just centering
ANRC result: ✅ Reasonable. The overall symmetrical layout and reading order (seal → Amharic → English) work fine at a glance.
8. A full usage system (icon-only, mono version, clear space, minimum size)
Do: Ship guidelines alongside the mark, not just one file. ANRC result: ❌ No evidence of this. Nothing in the source material suggests a monochrome variant, minimum-size rule, or icon-only lockup exists.
9. Uniqueness / trademark screening
ANRC result: Unknown — not assessable from a single image, but circular seal + dome + sunburst is a common regional-emblem pattern worth checking against neighboring institutions.
