Food safety & religious guidance
Raw beef: Traditional kurt and raw kitfo are culturally important but carry risks of bacteria and parasites. Freshness does not guarantee safety. Fully cooked beef is the safer choice, especially for pregnant people, children, older adults and people with weakened immunity.
Fasting: On fasting days, exclude meat, fish, eggs, dairy and animal-based fats; eat only at times permitted by your observance. Verify packaged ingredients for lard, gelatin, dairy and animal stocks. Some fasting rules and exceptions depend on church guidance.
Portions: As a flexible starting point, try 4–5 oz cooked protein (or an adequate portion of legumes), ¾–1 cup cooked grain or starch, and about 2 cups vegetables. Adjust for appetite and individual needs.
