Two Passports. Two Countries. Know Which One to Use.
British–American dual citizens: important 2026 travel-document rules for entering the United Kingdom and the United States, including UK ETA checks and expired-passport guidance.
A person who is both a British and U.S. citizen has rights in both countries—but those rights do not eliminate airline document checks. New enforcement of the UK's electronic travel permission system in 2026 makes it especially important to carry the right paperwork.
What changed in 2026?
From February 25, 2026, the UK began stricter enforcement of digital permission-to-travel checks for affected visitors. Airlines and other carriers check for an ETA, visa, or acceptable status documentation before travel. U.S. citizens who are not British or Irish generally need an ETA for qualifying short visits. But British–American dual citizens are exempt from the ETA process because they are British.
Under UK government guidance, British dual nationals should travel using a valid British or Irish passport, or an accepted certificate of entitlement to the right of abode together with a valid passport. The UK government explains the details on its official dual citizenship page.
Which passport should British–American dual citizens use?
| Destination | Document to carry | Key rule |
|---|---|---|
| Entering or leaving the United States | Valid U.S. passport | U.S. citizens, including dual citizens and children, must use a U.S. passport. |
| Traveling to the United Kingdom | Valid British or Irish passport; or valid other passport with a certificate of entitlement | British citizens cannot apply for a UK ETA. |
| U.S. citizen visiting the UK who is not British | Valid U.S. passport and usually an approved UK ETA for eligible short travel | Other permission may be required depending on purpose and status. |
| British citizen visiting the U.S. who is not American | British passport plus ESTA if eligible, or an appropriate visa | U.S. entry conditions depend on the traveler's circumstances. |
What if your British passport has expired?
The UK says a carrier may accept an expired British passport issued in 1989 or later, together with a valid passport from an ETA-eligible nationality, if the personal details match. The airline decides whether to board the traveler; this is not a guaranteed alternative to a valid British passport. Some travelers may be eligible for an emergency travel document.
Renewing your passport well ahead of travel is the more dependable solution. Check the exact exception and any updates directly with the UK government and your carrier.
Can a U.S. dual citizen travel on the British passport using ESTA?
No. The U.S. Department of State says American citizens must enter and depart the United States on a U.S. passport. U.S. citizens, including dual nationals, are not eligible for U.S. visas or ESTA as foreign visitors. If your U.S. passport is expired while abroad, contact a U.S. embassy or consulate about passport services before your trip.
What about UK ETA for U.S.-only citizens?
U.S. citizens without British or Irish citizenship ordinarily need an ETA for qualifying UK visits, unless another exemption applies. As of October 2026 the official ETA fee is £20, and an approved ETA generally lasts two years or until the linked passport expires, whichever comes first. Permission to travel does not guarantee admission. Check gov.uk/eta for the latest conditions.
Children and families with two nationalities
Some children may be British, American, or both by operation of citizenship law even if no passport has ever been issued. Parents should determine each child's status early and get the appropriate travel documents. A birth certificate alone may not satisfy airline document checks.
Before your next flight: a simple checklist
- Check whether every traveler—including children—is a citizen of the UK, U.S., or both.
- Check passport expiration dates, names, and ticket details.
- Renew your British and U.S. passports in advance, if applicable.
- Check ETA eligibility only if you are not a British or Irish citizen.
- Ask the airline which supporting documents it will accept before traveling.
- Use official government websites and avoid unauthorized visa/ETA intermediaries.

Can I fly to Britain on my U.S. passport if I am also British?
Generally you should show a valid British or Irish passport, or accepted right-of-abode documentation. Being a British citizen makes you ineligible for a UK ETA.
Will using the wrong passport make me lose citizenship?
Not by itself. The more immediate risk is a boarding problem or delays in confirming your right to travel.
Are Americans required to obtain a UK ETA?
Generally yes for qualifying visits if they do not hold British or Irish citizenship or another exemption. Always check the current UK rules.
Can I use an expired British passport?
Possibly under a narrow carrier-discretion arrangement described by the UK, but it is not guaranteed. Check with your airline and the government before departure.
