By ABC NEWS via Good Morning America

A Ethiopian Airlines flight destined for Rome was hijacked and forced to land in Switzerland, ABC News has learned.

Geneva Airport spokesman Bertrand Staempfli confirmed that Flight ET702 was hijacked and said that one man is in custody.

The airport remains closed following the incident.

Flight ET702 departed Addis Ababa, Ethiopia’s capital city, at 12:30 a.m. Monday local time. The flight was supposed to last for about six hours.

The plane circled repeatedly over Switzerland before landing, online flight patterns show.

According to a press release issued by Ethiopian Airlines, all passengers and crew are safe.

“Ethiopian Airlines is making immediate arrangements to fly its esteemed customers on-board the flight to their intended destinations,” the statement reads.
