Module 1. Welcome & Orientation
Goal: Understand what U.S. citizenship means, what the naturalization process is, and what you will learn in this program.
You’ll also practice saying basic N-400 information (your name, address, etc.), which is part of the real interview.

1. What is U.S. Citizenship?

• U.S. citizenship through naturalization means you become a full citizen of the United States.
• Citizens can vote in federal elections, carry a U.S. passport, and have more rights and responsibilities. (The curriculum highlights rights/responsibilities of citizens as core learning outcomes.)
• You promise loyalty to the United States and to follow U.S. laws.
2. What is Form N-400?

• Form N-400 is the Application for Naturalization. You must answer questions about your identity, history, travel, work, family, and background.
• In the interview, an immigration officer will ask you questions from your own N-400.
• You must understand and answer in English at a high-beginning ESL level. The curriculum goal is: speak, understand, read, and write English at high-beginning level.
3. What will you learn in this course?

• Civics: U.S. government, history, rights, responsibilities, holidays, symbols.
• English: reading, writing, listening, speaking for the interview and the test.
• N-400 interview practice: “What is your full legal name?”, “Where do you live?”, “Have you ever...?”.
• Digital skills: how to safely find real USCIS info online and use tools like email.
Practice: Say your information clearly (Interview skill)
In the interview, the officer may ask: “What is your full legal name?” “What is your date of birth?”
Practice saying them out loud in English.
