Overview

🦠 What is Marburg Virus?

Marburg virus causes Marburg Virus Disease (MVD), a rare but severe viral hemorrhagic fever similar to Ebola. It is believed to originate from infected Egyptian fruit bats and can spread between humans through direct contact.

Key point: It does not spread through the air like flu or COVID-19; it spreads through direct contact with blood or body fluids of an infected person.

Symptoms

• Sudden fever and chills
• Severe headache
• Weakness and fatigue
• Vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach pain
• Bleeding from gums, nose, or in stool

If you were recently in an outbreak area and develop fever or these symptoms, seek medical help immediately and mention your travel and contact history.

Protection & Care

🛡️ What To Do

1. Avoid direct contact with sick individuals or their body fluids.
2. Wash hands frequently with soap and water or alcohol-based rub.
3. Avoid caves or mines with fruit bats, and do not handle bats.
4. Do not handle bodies during funerals unless trained teams say it is safe.
5. If exposed or symptomatic, go to a health facility and inform staff immediately.

Treatment

🏥 Is There a Cure?

There is no specific approved antiviral cure yet, but early supportive care saves lives:

• IV fluids and electrolytes to prevent dehydration and shock.
• Oxygen support and blood-pressure monitoring.
• Treatment of secondary infections.
• Care in isolation units to protect others.
