About the Story True-story inspired
The Foreign Heart follows Giovanni, a young Italian medic sent to Ethiopia during the war between Italy and Ethiopia. He arrives as part of an occupying army – but everything changes when he meets Menen, a proud, skilled Ethiopian healer who defies him, challenges him, and slowly teaches him what it means to choose humanity over empire.
Instead of returning to Italy when the war collapses, Giovanni makes an impossible decision: he removes his uniform, stays in Ethiopia, marries Menen, and together they build a small medical center that becomes a sanctuary for generations.

A short taste of the dual-language edition:
In 1936, when the world was already cracking under the weight of new empires and old grudges, a young Italian medic named Giovanni Rinaldi stepped onto a ship in Naples and watched his country disappear behind him.
He did not go because he believed in glory. He went because he had no choice.
