n explosive row has erupted between diplomats and Ministers over their reluctance to help a British man on death row in Ethiopia.

A series of extraordinary emails, obtained by The Mail on Sunday, reveal officials’ increasing frustration at political inaction over Andargachew Tsege.

Tsege, 59, a father-of-three from London, was snatched at an airport in Yemen last June and illegally rendered to Ethiopia. There are concerns he may have been tortured.

Yet Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond said he could not ‘find time’ for a phone call to raise the issue and did not want to send a ‘negative’ letter.

In one email, an exasperated official asks: ‘Don’t we need to do more than give them a stern talking to?’

Tsege, who has lived in the UK since 1979, has been called Ethiopia’s Nelson Mandela. Tsege fell out with his university friend ex-Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, after he exposed government corruption and helped establish a pro-democracy party.

South Africa's Soweto tense after 'xenophobic' attacks

Police have arrested at least 121 people in connection with violence and looting of foreign-owned stores in Soweto township in Johannesburg that resulted in the death of at least two teenagers , prompting fears of renewed xenophobia in the country.

Police in South Africa said on Friday that r esidents of the township attacked foreign nationals after a teenager was allegedly shot dead by a Somali shop owner earler in the week. The 14-year-old was allegedly part of a group that had tried to rob the shop.

On Wednesday, as the riots and looting spread to other parts of Soweto, another teenager was killed amid the violence.

"It is alleged that the members of the community staged a revenge and started looting foreign national shops in the area. The owners of shops fired several shots towards the community to defend themselves," the South African police said in a statement .

ALL of the witnesses — including his victims — described the suspect as “white” but this confessed armed robber was actually wearing an incredibly convincing race-changing mask.

A Canadian court heard that Solomon Zemichael Teklie carried out a carjacking and two bank robberies before police pulled him over and arrested him — all in the space of 37 minutes.
He has pleaded guilty to three counts of robbery.
“I don’t know where this mask was made, I don’t know where it came from, but it’s uncanny how much it looks like a real person,” Edmonton crown prosecutor Carrie-Ann Downey said.
“It was so realistic that each witness on this file thought that Mr. Teklie was white. He is not white.”

Teklie began his January 2014 crime spree by holding a pellet gun to the head of Caroline Ombago in a shopping mall carpark before forcing her from her Honda Civic at about 11am.
In her victim impact statement, Ms Ombago said she had believed the gun was real and the event had left her sleepless and so fearful she had to leave town.
Minutes after the carjacking, Teklie walked into the Bank of Montreal and flashed his weapon to a teller, who handed over $1,000 (AUD$1010).
He then drove to a CIBC (Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce) branch, telling an employee:
“You have 30 seconds to give me the money.” He received $100 in $10 bills before fleeing in the stolen car.

Bank staff described Teklie as a white man to police, although two employees noticed he had “damaged” or “strange” skin.
Minutes later, officers spotted the vehicle Ms Ombago had reported stolen, pulling him over taking him into custody.
“This was a planned spree,” Ms Downey said. “Mr. Teklie had a plan. It might not have been a good plan, but it was a plan.”

Ethiopian shop owner shot and killed in South Africa, Khayelitsha

CAPE TOWN – An Ethiopian shopkeeper has been shot dead in Khayelitsha.

The 30-year-old was gunned down during a robbery in iLitha Park this morning.

The police's Frederick van Wyk said the circumstances surrounding the shooting are under investigation.

It’s not yet clear whether the murder is linked to this week's looting and violence in Gauteng.
Three people have been killed in the violent unrest that initially started in Soweto but then fanned out to other areas in Gauteng.

The unrest began on Monday night after a 14-year-old boy accused of trying to rob a shop in Doornkop was shot, allegedly by a foreign business owner.
