እረ ጉድ ፈላ!Cameroon Investigating Match-Fixing Accusations Against World Cup Team

RIO DE JANEIRO — Cameroon’s soccer federation announced late Monday that it would investigate its World Cup team for match fixing, paying particular attention to a heavy defeat by Croatia in the opening round.
Cameroon was among the worst teams at the World Cup, losing its three first-round matches by a combined score of 9-1 and fighting about its bonuses with its federation. It was eliminated before its final group game, a matchup against Brazil that FIFA’s top security official warned had drawn the association’s attention.

“Recent allegations of fraud around Cameroon 2014 FIFA World Cup three preliminary games, especially Cameroon vs. Croatia, as well of the ‘existence of seven bad apples [in our national team]’ do not reflect the values and principles promoted by our administration,” Cameroon’s federation, known as Fecafoot, said in a statement posted on its website.

“Though not yet contacted by FIFA in regards to this affair,” the statement continued, “our administration has already instructed its ethics committee to further investigate these accusations.”

Cameroon’s World Cup was by most measures a dismal experience. The team arrived in Brazil a day late after refusing to travel until it was paid its bonuses, in cash. It lost its opener to Mexico, 1-0, in a driving rainstorm, then was pummeled by Croatia, 4-0, in a game in which midfielder Alex Song was given a red card in the first half and one of his teammates attempted to head-butt another in the second.

The result became more suspicious after the German newsmagazine Der Spiegel reported that in a Facebook chat hours before the Cameroon-Croatia game, the notorious match fixer Wilson Raj Perumal had accurately predicted both the 4-0 score line and the first-half ejection of a Cameroon player. On Tuesday, Perumal, through his publisher, denied that he had predicted the score and the ejection.

“Some players behaved very badly,” Cameroon’s German coach, Volker Finke, said of his team’s effort. He added: “After such a result, we have to admit that it is a disgrace.”

That loss eliminated Cameroon even before its final group game, against Brazil. Since Brazil still needed a positive result from the match to win the group, and ease its path in the knockout stages, FIFA officials said they were closely monitoring the game in overseas gambling markets for suspicious betting patterns. Brazil won, 4-1.

FIFA, citing policy, refused to say whether it would conduct its own probe, saying it did not want to prejudice any possible investigation. “The integrity of the game is a top priority for FIFA, and as such we take any allegations of match manipulation very seriously,” a FIFA spokeswoman, Delia Fischer, said.

The involvement of Cameroon makes the issue a delicate one. The governing body for the sport in Africa, the Confederation of African Football, has been run since 1988 by a Cameroonian, Issa Hayatou. Hayatou is a powerful ally of FIFA’s president, Sepp Blatter, who is expected to run for re-election to another term next year.

Uruguay's incensed President Jose Mujica has lambasted Fifa bosses as "sons of bitches" who meted out "fascist" treatment to striker Luis Suarez for biting an Italian defender at the World Cup.

President Mujica made the comment as he welcomed Uruguay's team back from the World Cup on Sunday, putting his hand over his mouth in mock horror at the expletive.

He also referred to Fifa's stiff penalty on Uruguay's star striker as "fascist," though he said that Suarez could have been sanctioned with a lesser sentence.

The President's comments reflect the angry mood in Uruguay, a small country that has won the World Cup twice.

Uruguay, playing without Suarez, was eliminated from the World Cup on Saturday with a loss to Colombia.

Ato Yidnekachew Tessema (1921-1987)

Not only is Ato Yidnekechew Tessema called the "Father of Modern Sport in Ethiopia" but also the "Father of Sport in Africa". Ato Yidnekachew is an extraordinary man with extraordinary contribution to the development and popularization of sport in Ethiopia and the rest of the African continent.

The son of Negadras Tessema Eshete, a legendary literary figure, Ato Yidnekachew was born in the city of Jimma in Southern Ethiopia on Ethiopia's New Year day - Meskerem 1, 1914 (September 11, 1921). When he was four years old, the family moved back to Addis Ababa where young Yidnekachew attended school at the Teferi Mekonnen school. At school, Yidnekachew excelled in sports, particularly, soccer. Later in 1935, Yidnekachew joined the first Ethiopian soccer team-the St. George club. He also qualified to play in the national team.

In 1943, Yidnekachew opened the first sport federation with his colleague Amde Mikael Desalegn. Once the government recognized the importance of support for sport, Yidnekachew served his country and people in the capacities of secretary of the soccer and sport federation, president of national Olympics committee and commissioner of Sport federation.

Yidnekachew's contribution to sport to the African continent started with his pioneering efforts and subsequent success in establishing the African Soccer Federation (CAF) in 1964. He served CAF as the deputy president between 1964-1972 and as the President between 1972 and 1987. He was also member of the African Sport Congress, International Olympics Committee, FIFA and President of the African Olympics Committee.
Yidnekachew worked and fought hard to make sure that sport brought peace and understanding between people. He was strongly opposed to accepting sport clubs based on race and religion. He was also opposed to commercial advertisements by tobacco and alcohol companies in stadiums and sport events. Yidnekachew's contribution for the anti-Apartheid movement by preventing the then South Africa from participating in African and world sport events is legendary.

In his long career, Yidnekachew was awarded numerous medals and awards by the Ethiopian government and foreign governments.

Ethiopian Airlines plans to fly to Los Angeles

- To announce narrow-body aircraft purchase bid

The management of Ethiopian Airlines is planning to open a new route to Los Angeles, US, via Dublin, Ireland.

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – Ethiopian operates a daily flight between Addis Ababa and Washington DC and Los Angeles will be the second destination in the US for the airline. Ethiopian CEO Tewolde Gebremariam told The Reporter that his management is planning to start flights to Los Angeles via Dublin. “Since it is a long flight we need a stopover. And we are planning to make a stopover in Dublin. We have secured a traffic right from the Ireland Civil Aviation Authority,” Tewolde said. If everything goes according to schedule, Ethiopian will launch the flight to Los Angeles next year.

Ethiopian serves 80 destinations in five continents with 67 aircraft. Ethiopian, the fastest-growing African airline, is expanding its route network fast. Recently, it added Shanghai, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Vienna to its route network. It will also launch new flights to Ho Chi Minh City, Manila and Tokyo in the near future.

In a related news, the management of Ethiopian Airlines will announce the result of the bid to buy 20 narrow aircraft.

Tewolde GebremariamLast January Ethiopian issued request for proposal (RFP) inviting companies to present their proposals for the supply of narrow-body aircraft. Consequently, Mitsubishi of Japan, Ilyshin of Russia, Embraer of Brazil, Bomardier of Canada, the European consortium Airbus and the US airframer, Boeing, submitted their proposals to Ethiopian. The companies proposed regional jets with 80-120 seats. Ethiopian could buy up to 20 narrow-body aircraft that it will deploy on its regional routes.

Mitsubishi has presented its MRJ jets. Ilyshin Finance CO. proposed the Sukhoi 100 aircraft. The Brazilian manufacturer presented the E-Jets. Bombardier came up with the C-series aircraft. Boeing proposed its new B737 MAX aircraft while its European arch rival Airbus demonstrated the much- touted A320NEO aircraft.

The technical committee of Ethiopian evaluated the proposals submitted by the six companies. Tewolde told The Reporter that the evaluation process is being finalized. According to Tewolde, the result of the bid will be announced next month.

Ethiopian fleet is dominated by Boeing aircraft. Currently, the airline operates B737, B757, B767, B777 , B787 and two MD 11 freighter aircraft. On the domestic routes the airline operates Bombardier Q400 aircraft. However, for the first time in its 69 year history it will operate Airbus aircraft in 2016.

Ethiopian has the youngest fleet of aircraft in Africa with an average age of seven. In line with Ethiopian’s 15 year development roadmap, Vision 2025, the carrier plans to double its fleet to 112 planes and carry 18 million passengers over 92 routes by 2025.
