World Bank Urges Ethiopia to Devalue Birr to Boost Exports

World Bank Urges Ethiopia to Devalue Birr to Boost Exports
By William Davison Jul 22, 2014 10:55 AM PT

Ethiopia’s birr is overvalued and the country would benefit from a devaluation to boost export revenue and accelerate economic growth, the World Bank said.

Reducing the currency’s value by 10 percent in real terms may lead to a 5 percent increase in stalled export earnings and a 2 percent increase in growth, Lars Moller, the bank’s chief economist in Ethiopia, told reporters today in the capital, Addis Ababa.

Ethiopia last devalued its currency by 17 percent against the dollar in September 2010. Since then, the birr has appreciated in real terms by more than 50 percent, leading to a currency that’s overvalued by 31 percent, Moller said at a presentation of the lender’s third Ethiopia Economic Update.

After growing at a rate of about 20 percent in previous years, annual Ethiopian goods exports have remained steady at about $3 billion for the past two years, primarily because of falling international commodity prices. Foreign earnings from goods may have grown about 8 percent in the fiscal year that ended July 7 from $3.08 billion last year, Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn said July 18 to reporters. The country uses the Ethiopian calendar.

Although the exact effect of devaluing the currency is uncertain, there would be some benefit to the country, Moller said.
‘Insufficient Depreciation’

“The bottom line is that Ethiopia competes on prices and the real exchange rate is overvalued,” he said.

A decision to adjust the exchange rate would be made on the basis of what its wider impact on the economy would be, State Minister of Finance Ahmed Shide said at the event. The birr is currently at 19.7495 per dollar.

Ethiopia, the world’s most populous landlocked nation, may grow as much as 8.5 percent this year and next, the International Monetary Fund said last month. The nation earns most foreign-exchange from state-owned Ethiopian Airlines, while coffee exports from Africa’s largest producer of the beans are the highest grossing commodity.

To boost exports, the World Bank also recommended focusing on adding value to commodity exports by expanding processing and packaging, building industrial zones, opening access to credit for small- and medium-size enterprises, and improving costly and time-consuming trade logistics.

Ethiopia is investing to tackle infrastructure bottlenecks such as power and transport networks that have been a barrier to growth, which should help the business climate, Ahmed said.

The World Bank estimates Ethiopia could earn $1 billion a year from exporting electricity by 2023 if all of its hydroelectric projects are completed as planned, Moller said.

Ethiopian Airlines plans to launch an improved flight schedule for its daily flight from Addis Ababa to Frankfurt.

Due to come into effect on September 8, flights from the Ethiopian capital will depart at 23:59 and arrive in Frankfurt at 06:20.
By introducing the night flight schedule, Ethiopian Airlines aims to offer more convenient flight connections within its entire African route network, including to Johannesburg, Seychelles, Lilongwe, Accra, Lagos, Lusaka, Djibouti and Harare among others.
Currently implementing a 15-year strategic plan called Vision 2025, Ethiopian’s goal is to become the leading aviation group in Africa with seven business centers.
These include Ethiopian Domestic and Regional Airline; Ethiopian International Passenger Airline; Ethiopian Cargo; Ethiopian MRO; Ethiopian Aviation Academy; Ethiopian In-flight Catering Services; and Ethiopian Ground Service.
In operation for close seven decades, the airline serves more than 82 destinations across five continents and has recorded an average growth of 25% in the past seven years.

The Ethiopian Airlines (ET) has named its eighth 787 Dreamliner after the Taj Mahal,

In what is being seen as a recognition of the heavy traffic generated on its routes to the Indian subcontinent, the flagship carrier of the East African nation of Ethiopia has named its newest Boeing 787 Dreamliner after India's most famous monument.

The Ethiopian Airlines (ET) has named its eighth 787 Dreamliner after the Taj Mahal, Mughal emperor Shah Jahan's monument of love to his wife. This is the first time that the airline has named an aircraft of its Dreamliner fleet after a historical or heritage site outside of Africa.

To meet the demand from the Indian market, Ethiopian Airlines has decided to operate big-bodied aircraft connecting this Ethiopian capital. Officials said the airline has already deployed the 787 Dreamliner and is exploring new direct destinations in India.

More than 13 million people travel out of India every year. Hence, with its large African network, ET hopes that it will be in a position to benefit from the heavy tourism business from India and the large number of those travelling across the region.

Ethiopian, which currently flies daily to New Delhi and twice daily to Mumbai, is also looking at other Indian destinations like Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram.

It also has a code sharing agreement with Air India and is set to start services to the south Indian city of Chennai, which it considers to be a gateway to a larger market.

ET has named its previous seven Boeing 787s as Africa First, Lucy, Queen of Sheba, Lake Tana, Walia Ibex and Serengeti, all Ethiopian and African sites.

"In doing so we are heralding the renaissance of Africa globally and we will continue promoting iconic international figures found in the destinations we serve," the ET official said.

"This will also strengthen our already established relations with India as we have an increasing number of Indian travellers."

"As a pan African airline, ET is reflecting the global vision and scope of its services through such a naming," an official from ET told IANS. "This is to also show ET's commitment to recognise the world's famous places by carrying their names globally," he added.

ET is the first African carrier to put Boeing's new state-of-the-art airplane into regular service in Africa. The first arrived last December and Ethiopian has nine more on order. This comes as Ethiopian becomes the 26th member of the Star Alliance, the world's largest airline alliance.
