Protests Expected On San Diego City Council Taxi Permit Plan

The San Diego City Council is moving Monday's meeting to Golden Hall to accommodate a large crowd expected for a proposal to eliminate a cap on the number of taxi permits issued by the city.

The idea has garnered either robust support or strong opposition from drivers and owners at previous hearings at the committee level, with discussions on the topic drawing several hours of public testimony.

Since the current lid of 993 permits creates a limited supply, they're being resold in an underground market, Councilwoman Marti Emerald said in August.

She said the permits, administered for the city by the Metropolitan Transit System and issued for a $3,000 fee, are fetching more than $100,000 in some cases, and buyers pass on costs to drivers, who have to work long hours at low pay as a result.

Opponents say allowing more taxis on the street would lead to less income for taxi companies already buffeted by competition from unregulated social media-based companies like Lyft and Uber, meaning the drivers would make even less money.

The number of permits issued on behalf of the city is derived through a formula based on the number of vehicle trips it would take to meet demand.

The proposal the council will consider would get rid of the cap, limit the age of taxicabs to 10 years and prohibit the use of vehicles with salvage titles as taxis.

Councilmen David Alvarez and Scott Sherman have also proposed that a requirement that a prospective permittee have five years of driving or management experience be reduced to six months — in part because of the Lyft and Uber competition. Their proposal also calls for clarifying language regarding citizenship and legal U.S. residency.

Monday's meeting is set to begin at 1 p.m. The City Council will take Tuesday off to observe Veterans Day.

LONDON - WTM 2014 - REPORT: Ethiopian Airlines has announced at this year’s World Travel Market, the schedule for its new Boeing 787 Dreamliner flights linking Dublin with Los Angeles and Addis Ababa. Three flights per week will commence on 20th June 2015 which for the first time will directly connect Ethiopia’s capital with Dublin and the West Coast of America.

The schedule makes Ethiopian Airlines the first of the many transatlantic flights to arrive onto the West Coast from Europe, and one of the last to arrive back into Dublin. The timings from and to Dublin enable business travellers to maximize the opportunity of arriving into LA for a full day of meetings before returning home on the same day.

Ireland is home to bases for a number of American west coast companies including Google and Apple, whilst Los Angeles has a large Ethiopian community. Combined with the tourist attraction of the bright lights of Hollywood, which attracts thousands of Irish tourists, each year, Ethiopian Airlines anticipates the route will fill a valuable gap in flight availability that will appeal to the business, tourism and visiting friends and relatives sectors. The service will also connect the Californian state with the African continent via its Addis Ababa hub that serves 49 African destinations including Kilimanjaro, Accra, Zanzibar, Seychelles, Johannesburg and Lagos.

Significantly the new fifth freedom flight enables Ethiopian Airlines to sell all sectors of the route to passengers from Addis Ababa via Dublin directly onto Los Angeles. This new route will complement the Ethiopian Airlines daily flight to Addis Ababa from London Heathrow.

Ethiopian flights to Dublin and Los Angeles will be flown by the ultra-modern Boeing 787 Dreamliner, which offers unparalleled on-board comfort to passengers. The Los Angeles destination will be the fifth Americas destination served by the airline in addition to Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Toronto and Washington DC and Dublin will be the tenth European city served by Ethiopian as well as Brussels, Frankfurt, London, Milan, Madrid, Paris, Rome, Stockholm, and Vienna. All told Ethiopian Airlines serves 85 destinations across five continents. - See more at: http://www.traveldailynews.com/news/article/63135/ethiopian-airlines-announces-schedule-from#sthash.PNcclufg.dpuf

የኢትዮጵያ አየር መንገድ ሶስተኛውን B777-200LR ላይነር ተረከበ/Ethiopian Airlines has taken delivery of a third B777-200LR freighter

Ethiopian Airlines has taken delivery of a third B777-200LR freighter, part of a strategic fleet expansion to support African exports of perishable cargo.
Ethiopian, still the only African operator of B777 freighters, said that the aircraft’s uplift, range, fuel efficiency and temperature control capabilities make it “perfectly suited for the transport of Ethiopia’s growing export of perishables, such as fruits, flowers, vegetables and meat”.
In line with its Vision 2025 strategic roadmap, the airline will phase in an additional B777-200LR freighter before the end of 2014 and two more in 2015.
It is also building a new cargo terminal with both cold and dry storage facilities, capable of handling 1.2m tons of cargo annually.
Tewolde Gebremariam, chief executive of Ethiopian Airlines, said: “We are phasing in the most modern cargo aircraft such as the B777-200LR freighter and building one of the largest cargo terminals in the world with the aim of expanding and improving our cargo service in support of our country’s and our continent’s growing imports and exports.
“The B777 freighter is unmatched in its fleet category and will be deployed on existing and new long routes for carriage of flowers, fruits, vegetables and meat.”

Ethiopian Cargo, among the largest cargo operators in Africa, currently flies to 24 freighter destinations in Africa, the Middle East, Asia and Europe using eight dedicated freighters, including wide-bodies such as the B777 and MD-11.
