Canadian Passport Photo Requirements (Official Guide)
Our checker uses the same rules published in the Government of Canada’s “Passport photo specifications” (Revised 2015).
- Two identical photos are required per passport application.
- Photos must be taken in person by a commercial photographer (inside or outside Canada).
- Photos must be taken within the last 6 months.
- Each photo must measure exactly 50 mm wide × 70 mm high (approximately 2" × 2¾").
- The face height (chin to natural top of head) must be between 31 mm and 36 mm.
- Photos must be originals, not printed or scanned from an existing photo.
- Printed on plain, high-quality photo paper (no heavy card or standard printer paper).
- Either colour or black & white photos are accepted.
When photos are taken outside Canada, foreign “standard passport” formats (such as 2"×2" US photos) often do not meet the Canadian 50×70 mm requirement.
- Background must be plain white or light-coloured with clear contrast between the face, clothing and background.
- Applicant must have a neutral expression: no smiling, mouth closed, eyes open, looking straight at the camera.
- The face and shoulders must be square to the camera, with the head centred and not tilted.
- Photos must be clear, sharp and in focus with natural skin tones.
- Lighting must be uniform: no glare or shadows on the face, around the ears, on the shoulders or in the background.
- No digital retouching that changes how you look (no smoothing, reshaping or artificial background changes).
These rules help ensure that facial features are clearly visible and machine-readable across all applications.
- Tinted eyeglasses and sunglasses are not allowed.
- Prescription eyeglasses are allowed only if the eyes are clearly visible and there is no reflection or glare on the lenses.
- Photos with “red eye” or digital red-eye corrections are not accepted.
- Head coverings for religious or medical reasons are allowed, but the full face must be visible and the covering must not cast shadows on the face.
- For wheelchairs, IRCC recommends placing a plain white blanket behind the head so that edges of the face and head are clearly visible.
- Medical devices such as a nasal cannula may appear in the photo if the eyes remain clearly visible; including a short letter of explanation is recommended.
- Child photos must show only the head and shoulders. Parent or child hands cannot appear in the photo.
- For newborns, minor variation in expression is tolerated, but the eyes should be open when possible.
- Newborn photos may be taken in a car seat if a white blanket is placed behind the head and there are no shadows.
- On the back of one photo, the photographer or studio must write or stamp:
- Photographer/studio name
- Complete address (street, city, postal code, country)
- Date the photo was taken
- Space must be left for the applicant’s name, the guarantor’s signature and the guarantor’s declaration on the back of that same photo.
Following these print and back-of-photo rules helps avoid delays when a guarantor must sign and certify your photo.
