WorldSpan GDS Overview
WorldSpan is a leading Global Distribution System (GDS) that provides comprehensive travel technology solutions. It was acquired by Travelport in 2007 and integrated into the Galileo system, but many legacy WorldSpan commands and workflows remain in use.
Key Features of WorldSpan
| Feature | Description |
|---|---|
| Advanced Shopping | Powerful fare search and comparison tools |
| Integrated Content | Access to flights, hotels, cars, and more |
| Automation Tools | Macros and scripting capabilities |
| Corporate Solutions | Dedicated tools for business travel management |
WorldSpan is known for its powerful shopping capabilities and flexible pricing options, making it a favorite among many travel professionals.
WorldSpan Interface Options
WorldSpan can be accessed through different interfaces:
- WorldSpan Go!: Web-based interface
- WorldSpan Travel Manager: Desktop application
- Command Line Interface: Traditional green screen
- API Integration: For custom applications
Industry Position
WorldSpan serves a significant portion of the travel market with:
- Over 500 airlines worldwide
- More than 200,000 hotel properties
- 50+ car rental companies
- Thousands of travel agencies and corporations
While WorldSpan has been integrated into Travelport's platform, many of its unique commands and workflows continue to be used by travel professionals worldwide.
In this lecture, we'll explore the fundamental syntax and commands that form the foundation of WorldSpan operations.
Understanding WorldSpan Syntax
WorldSpan uses a command-driven interface with specific formats and codes. The basic structure follows:
Essential Navigation Commands
| Command | Description | Example |
|---|---|---|
AV |
Flight availability | AV NYCLAX 15DEC |
SB |
Sell booking (create PNR) | SB3 |
RT |
Retrieve PNR | RT ABC123 |
IG |
Ignore transaction | IG |
ER |
End transaction | ER |
City and Airport Codes
WorldSpan uses 3-letter IATA codes for cities and airports:
ORD - Chicago O'Hare
LON - London
FRA - Frankfurt
Date and Time Format
WorldSpan uses specific formats for dates and times:
1030A - 10:30 AM
1430 - 2:30 PM (24-hour format)
WorldSpan commands often use a slash (/) to separate parameters, unlike Sabre which typically uses spaces. Pay attention to this difference if you're transitioning from other GDS systems.
Practical Exercise
Let's practice with a simple scenario: A client wants to check flights from Chicago to London on January 20th.
The system will return a list of available flights with details including airline, flight number, times, and availability.
In this lecture, we'll dive deeper into flight availability searches and scheduling functions in WorldSpan.
Advanced Availability Commands
| Command | Description | Example |
|---|---|---|
AVS |
Availability with sorting options | AVS NYCLAX 15DEC/E |
FV |
Fare display | FV NYCLAX |
SK |
Schedule display | SK NYCLAX |
FQ |
Low fare search | FQ NYCLAX 15DEC |
Interpreting Availability Displays
When you run an availability search, WorldSpan returns a formatted display with key information:
Class of Service Codes
Understanding class codes is crucial for booking the right fare category:
| Code | Class |
|---|---|
F |
First Class |
J |
Business Class |
Y |
Economy/Coach |
M |
Discount Economy |
K |
Budget Economy |
Working with Connecting Flights
For complex itineraries with connections, you can specify multiple segments:
WorldSpan's AVS command with sorting options (/E for earliest, /L for latest, /P for price) is particularly powerful for finding the best options quickly.
Practical Exercise
Scenario: A client needs the cheapest flights from New York to Paris in economy class for next month.
