Overview
This chapter continues the American Inventos series with inventors whose last names begin mainly with D, E and F. Together they show how invention stretches from railroads and engines to electronics, medicine, computing, navigation and clean energy. Some names on this list are globally known and some are not, yet many of the so-called lesser-known innovators helped build the systems that modern life depends on every day.
One major thread is the move from the mechanical age into the digital age. Lee de Forest’s Audion amplifier, Mark Dean’s computer peripherals work, Whitfield Diffie’s public-key cryptography, Federico Faggin’s microprocessor and Eric Fossum’s CMOS image sensor each represent a different layer of the modern technological stack. Another theme is health and medicine, seen in MRI, blood plasma preservation, diabetes testing, OCT imaging, ulcer medicines, contraception and gene editing.
