NEW DELHI: The enigmatic chief of Islamic State jihadist group Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi is dead, Radio Iran has reported on Monday.

Earlier, a Guardian report quoting sources with inside knowledge of the group reported that al-Baghdadi was severely injured in a US-led coalition air strike in March.

According to that report, al-Baghdadi was inujred at al-Baaj district of Nineveh, close to the Syrian border. It also said he was making a slow recovery and was out of his day-to-day control of the jihadist group.

Al-Baghdadi, believed to be in his 40s, had a $10 million US bounty on his head. Since taking the reins of the Islamic State in 2010, he had transformed it from a local branch of al-Qaida into an independent transnational military force, positioning himself as perhaps the pre-eminent figure in the global jihadist community. ISIS suffered a series of major setbacks in the recent months with many of its top commanders being killed or severely injured.

Recently, a top Iraqi military commander Lieutenant General Abdul Amir al Shammari told Sky News that his forces had killed "more than 250 terrorists in the past few days".

He said this had been achieved with assistance from the Iraqi air force, military helicopters and coalition air strikes. "The coalition strikes provided cover for our troops to push forward."

Under the leadership of al-Baghdadi, the Islamic State, which it called itself as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) earlier, had gained ground across northern and western Iraq in a lightning advance in June and July last year, causing several of Iraq's army and police divisions to fall into disarray.

It had carried out thousands of public executions using brutal methods and implemented strict Islamic law in areas they captured, which sent shockwave across the global community.

San  Diego Ethiopians Remembered  ISIS Victims in Ethiopian Way, i.e. both Christians  and Muslims  together  .

One of the biggest mistake ISIS is making not knowing what they are looking for. If you are asking yourself  ISIS is killing only Christians  they are also killing Muslims, if you are asking  they killing  because they are killing people with no money and no power. They killing women, kids, Muslim and christian
SAN DIEGO — Hundreds from San Diego’s Ethiopian community gathered in Mission Beach Sunday for a vigil to honor more than two dozen Ethiopian Christians recently killed by ISIS in Libya.
“I started shaking — I was sad, I was broken. How can you cut someone’s head off? It’s not human — you slaughtered someone,” said Milka Badebo, a participant.
Many at the vigil have loved ones in Ethiopia and are worried more will become targets because of their faith, as ISIS continues to document dramatic mass killings of Christians.
“We are Christian. We don’t believe in killing — we don’t believe in revenge. But justice has to be served,” said Teferi Teshome, a vigil organizer.
Both Christians and Muslims joined together to honor victims — and spread awareness of a growing terror threat in their home country.

Two millionaire people traffickers have been heard mocking the migrant boat disasters that have resulted in thousands of deaths in the Mediterranean, it has been reported.
One of them, an Eritrean called Mered Medhanie, also known as The General, was heard laughing on a police wiretap about overloading migrant ships, a problem that causes them to capsize.
Medhanie, 34, who is based in the Libyan capital of Tripoli, is said to have boasted: 'They say I put too many aboard, but they're the ones who want to leave in a hurry.'
A second trafficker, Ermias Ghermay, who is thought to have made £72million with Medhanie from smuggling in the last two years, also showed callous disregard for the plight of his 'customers'.
He was heard declaring last summer: 'They organised another trip a few days ago. I don't know what happened – they probably died.'
Ghermay, who also lives in Tripoli, was already wanted on an arrest warrant in connection with an October 2013 capsizing off Lampedusa that left 366 dead.
Reports of the conversations come just days after at least 900 people were feared to have drowned in one of the worst maritime disasters since the end of World War Two.

11 held during Jeppestown raid by army, police

Zuma vows to tackle 'underlying' problems behind xenophobic attacks

Johannesburg - President Jacob Zuma on Wednesday pledged to tackle the "underlying" problems behind the spate of recent xenophobic attacks, as troops were sent in to support police in a crackdown against attacks on immigrants that have left at least seven people dead.Overnight on Tuesday, 11 men were arrested in a joint police and army raid on a hostel in Jeppestown, in downtown Johannesburg, hours after the military was deployed.
After meeting business, civil and religious leaders, Zuma said his government would take decisive steps to address "underlying" problems behind the attacks and ensure foreigners were not targeted.
"South Africans are not xenophobic," he said. "If we don't deal with the underlying issues, it will come back."
"We have taken a decision that we don't want to see it again and therefore we are going to be working together with that determination."
Zuma gave few details of government plans, but said the violence was driven by "criminal elements" as well as friction between foreigners and locals.
Many South Africans believe poverty and a severe jobs shortage is one driving factor behind mobs in Johannesburg and Durban targeting migrants from Zimbabwe, Malawi, Mozambique and other African countries.
The spate of attacks has revived memories of xenophobic bloodshed in 2008, when 62 people were killed, tarnishing South Africa's post-apartheid image as a "rainbow nation".
The SANDF was deployed to restore order in the 2008 unrest, and was also used against violent strikers in 2012.
'Police are overwhelmed'
Deputy general secretary of the ANC, Jessie Duarte, said the targeting of migrants was "well organised and co-ordinated" and that the army would only play a supporting role in preventing unrest.
"The army is there to assist the police [and] to ensure police are able to conduct searches," she told a press conference on Wednesday.
"The issue we have here is poverty, inequality and unemployment - it is huge for us."
Bene M'Poko, the Democratic Republic of Congo ambassador, told reporters at the event that the three weeks of violence threatened South Africa's reputation for tolerance.
"This is a sad day for South Africa... and also for the continent," he said.
"The deployment of the army indicated that police are overwhelmed," he added, accusing police of being slow to react.
"We in the diplomatic community wondered, where [are] the riot police?"
Late Tuesday, dozens of soldiers surrounded the workers' hostel in Jeppestown that has been a hotspot for xenophobic clashes, and police stormed inside.
As a helicopter hovered overhead, officers moved from floor to floor conducting searches as residents lay face down in corridors.
"Eleven suspects were arrested in Jeppe hostel for possession of dagga and stolen property. They were aged between 24 and 49," police spokesperson Solomon Makgale said.
'Soldiers are trained to kill'
The involvement of soldiers was criticised by the EFF as a overreaction and a misuse of the military.
"[The] government is losing control over society and now resorting to extreme measures in the same manner done by the apartheid regime," it said.
"Soldiers and armies all over the world are trained to kill, and we will not be shocked when instead of keeping peace in the townships, there are casualties."
A mass anti-xenophobia march is planned in Johannesburg on Thursday, and Zuma is due to hold talks with groups representing foreign nationals living in South Africa on Friday.
Regional relations have been strained by the attacks, with Zimbabwe, Malawi and Mozambique organising for some worried citizens to return home.
Neighbouring Mozambique said more than 2 000 citizens had fled the violence.
Five buses also arrived back in Zimbabwe on Wednesday.
"I don't know what to do next," said Wonder Nyamutowa, who worked as a construction worker in Durban.
"I am a breadwinner and I could manage to send money back to my family, but I won't go back."
