Ethiopia Co-Pilot Hijacker 'Made Crash Threat'

A co-pilot who hijacked his own plane in a bid to gain asylum threatened to crash before landing safely and handing himself in, a passenger has claimed.
The Ethiopian man, who has been named as Hailemedehin Abera Tagegn, seized control of the Boeing 767 when the Italian pilot went to the toilet.
Flight ET702, with 202 passengers and crew on board, had taken off from the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa bound for Rome.
Francesco Cuomo told the Italian news agency ANSA the pilot demanded the hijacker open the door and tried unsuccessfully to break it down.
He added the hijacker, speaking in poor English on a loudspeaker, threatened to crash the aircraft and then the oxygen masks came down.
The co-pilot safely landed the plane in Geneva, Switzerland, at about 5am. He used a rope to climb down from a cockpit window and surrendered to police on the runway. Officials earlier said passengers had not been aware of the hijack.
Redwan Hussein, Ethiopia's information minister, said the hijacker, who he named as Hailemedehin Abera Tagegn, had been working with the airline for five years and had no criminal record.
Mr Hussein described him as "medically sane", which he said made the motives for his actions all the more puzzling.
"So the intention, what forced him to hijack his own plane, still beggars belief ... any political, social or economic reason would not make sense to hijack your plane and be a criminal."
Police spokesman Pierre Grangean said: "Just after landing, the co-pilot came out of the cockpit and ran to the police and said, 'I'm the hijacker.' He said he is not safe in his own country and wants asylum."
Swiss federal authorities are now investigating and could press charges that could carry a prison sentence of up to 20 years.
FlightRadar 24 - an app for mobile devices - showed the flight circling over Geneva several times before landing.
The Boeing 767-300 plane had 20 minutes of fuel left when it landed after being guided to the runway by two Italian fighter planes.
Sky's Harriet Hadfield, in Geneva, said the airport had not yet opened when the plane hit the runway - and passengers had to wait until it did before disembarking.
She said: "It must have been a very terrifying experience for the passengers on board.
"It seems to have been the case that passengers had to wait until the airport opened. Happily there are no injuries but it must have been a very, very frightening experience."
Speaking about why the co-pilot might have been seeking asylum, Human Rights Watch said Ethiopia's human rights record "has sharply deteriorated" over the years.

Ethiopian plane hijacked to Geneva by co-pilot

GENEVA — An Ethiopian Airlines co-pilot hijacked a plane bound for Rome on Monday and flew it to Geneva where he wanted to seek asylum, officials said.
The Boeing 767-300 plane with 202 passengers and crew aboard had taken off from the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa and landed in the Swiss city at about 6 a.m. (0500 GMT). Officials said no one on the flight was injured.
Geneva airport chief executive Robert Deillon told reporters that the co-pilot, an Ethiopian man born in 1983, took control of the plane when the pilot ventured outside the cockpit.
“The pilot went to the toilet and he (the co-pilot) locked himself in the cockpit,” Deillon said.
The man “wanted asylum in Switzerland,” he said. “That's the motivation of the hijacking.”
Geneva prosecutor Olivier Jornot said Swiss federal authorities were investigating the hijacking and would press charges that could carry a prison sentence of up to 20 years.

Authorities: Co-Pilot Took Control of Ethiopian Airlines Plane, Wanted Asylum (WSJ)

An Ethiopian Airlines jet en route from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to Rome was forced to land in Geneva on Monday after the co-pilot apparently took control of the aircraft in an attempt to seek asylum, authorities said.
Police arrested the co-pilot of Ethiopian Airlines flight 702 after the plane made an unscheduled landing at Geneva airport around 6 a.m. Central European Time, authorities said at a news conference.
The co-pilot was motivated to seek asylum because he felt threatened in his home country, according to the authorities.
The co-pilot, identified as an Ethiopian born in 1983, fled the aircraft through a cockpit window, the authorities said. No one was injured during the event.
After a temporary closure, the airport reopened for departures at 8 a.m. local time, with arrivals starting at about 8:45 a.m., according to a notice on the airport's website.

Ethiopian Airlines flight hijacked by co-pilot seeking asylum in Switzerland

Swiss authorities say the hijacker of an Ethiopian Airlines flight forced to land at Geneva's international airport was the plane's co-pilot.
The airline says flight ET-702 from Addis Ababa to Rome was "forced to proceed" to Geneva, where it landed early on Monday (local time).
Airport spokesman Bertrand Staempfli told reporters the co-pilot took control of the plane when the pilot went to the toilet.
"He said he felt threatened in his country and wants to seek asylum in Switzerland," he said.
After the plane landed the co-pilot left through the window on a rope and surrendered to police.
Police say the man was not armed, and there was no risk to crew or passengers at any time.
State-run Ethiopian television said there had been 193 passengers on board the Boeing aircraft, including 140 Italian nationals.
The brief drama caused the closure of the airport and cancellation of some short-haul flights. Some incoming flights were diverted to other airports.
Hundreds of passengers booked on disrupted flights scrambled to change their tickets.
A flight tracking app for mobile devices showed the flight circling over the Swiss city several times before landing.
Ethiopian nationals and the Horn of Africa country's flag carrier have been involved in several hijackings in the past.
In 1993, an Ethiopian used a gun hidden in his hat to hijack a German passenger jet bound for New York. He was later sentenced to 20 years in a US prison.
Two years later, police in Greece overpowered an Ethiopian hijacker who held a knife to the throat of an Olympic Airways stewardess and demanded political asylum.
At least 50 people were killed when a hijacked Ethiopian Airlines passenger jet crashed in the Indian Ocean in 1996.
In 2001, a dozen Ethiopian students hijacked a plane carrying around 60 people and flew to Sudan.

Co-pilot hijacked Ethiopian Airlines' ET 702; Wanted asylum in Switzerland

Latest update: Co-pilot hijacked Ethiopian Airlines' ET 702; Wanted asylum in Switzerland, say Geneva Police.

Passengers left the plane parked near the end of the runway and were checked by police as they held their hands on their necks, before boarding a bus, a Reuters witness said.
Swiss authorities detained the hijacker of an Ethiopian Airlines flight that was forced to land at Geneva's international airport on Monday, airport police said, adding that passengers and crew were safe.
The situation was "under control", police said after flight ET 702 had been diverted from its original destination of Rome. The airline earlier said the flight from the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa had been "forced to proceed" to Geneva.
An Ethiopian government spokesman, Redwan Hussein, told Reuters the flight had made a scheduled stop in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, where he said the hijacker or hijackers might have boarded the flight.
"We don't know where they are from or how many they are but it looks like the hijacker or hijackers boarded the flight in Khartoum," Redwan told Reuters shortly before police announced they had detained the assailant.
In an apparent recording of a radio communication between the aircraft and air traffic control posted on the social media site Twitter, a demand for asylum can clearly be heard.
Reuters could not independently verify the authenticity of the recording and it was not immediately clear whether it was a hijacker or pilot speaking from the plane.
"We need asylum or assurance we will not be transferred to the Ethiopian government," the voice in the recording said, posted by Twitter user @MatthewKeysLive.

An Ethiopian Airlines jet has landed in Geneva after an apparent hijacking, according to multiple reports

An Ethiopian Airlines jet has landed in Geneva after an apparent hijacking, according to multiple reports.

Flight 702 was en route to Rome from Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, when it sent out transponder code 7500, which is supposed to indicate a hijacking, according to AirlineReporter.com, a website of self-described "aviation geeks."

BBC News says there has been one arrest and that police describe the situation as "under control."

The plane, a Boeing 767-300, was flying over Sudan when it sent out the signal.

It reached Geneva with just 20 minutes of fuel left, circling the airport several times before landing, AirlineReporter noted, citing information from air traffic controllers heard on LiveATC.net.

The Geneva airport was shut down and the jet circled several times before landing, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

Reuters also reported the incident as a hijacking.

"Ethiopian Airlines flight ET-702 on scheduled service departing from Addis Ababa on 17 February 2014 at 00:30 (local time) scheduled to arrive in Rome at 04:40 (local time) was forced to proceed to Geneva Airport," the airline said in a statement.

The airline did not say whether the plane had been hijacked nor did it offer a reason for the diversion.

"Accordingly, the flight has landed safely at Geneva Airport. All passengers and crew are safe at Geneva Airport. Ethiopian Airlines is making immediate arrangements to fly its esteemed customers on-board the flight to their intended destinations."

This is a developing story. The Huffington Post will update this page with information as it arrives.

Breaking News!Ethiopian Airlines’ Flight 702 Hijacked. Lands in Geneva.

At 5:00pm Pacific Time, Ethiopian Flight 702, a Boeing 767-300 (registered ET-AMF) was flying over Sudan when it started squawking 7500. The transponder code, is supposed to indicate a “hijacking.”

Sometimes, pilots accidentally switch to this code or equipment malfunctions. This however, does not appear to be the case. The aircraft can be tracked live via Flightradar 24.

This was hopefully just an error, but this was certainly a deviation from normal flight.

We have reached out to a source who is an aircraft electrical expert and they confirmed that a “7500″ code can’t come from a glitch.

The flight, operating from Addis Abba to Rome has been confirmed by Rome Airport not to have arrived yet. It is currently circling over Geneva Airport (GVA), with a military escort. Emergency crews are standing by a GVA.
