Los Angeles Little Ethiopia is about to celebrate its 13th birthday

By Amde Mitiku , Ethiovibe Contributor

Los Angeles is one of the giant city in America, According to the 2012 US Census Bureau Los Angeles city’s population is passing 3.8 million, but the Los Angeles  county’s population is passing 10 million and neighboring county the Orange county’s population is passing 3.1 million. Most Ethiopians in Los Angles are living in Los Angeles  and Orange counties as well as Riverside (2.2.million) and Kern (.8million) counties. That means the total population in Los Angeles county and neighboring counties is passing 20 million. It translated to , more people are living in these counties  than  Anglo or Burkina Faso even Holland. If these counties are considered  as  a country they can be the 59th country in the world (See the table below).

With this huge population Los Angles is known as the center of entertainment and glamor but more importantly Los Angles is the home of  diverse ethnics and  global population. Los Angles has areas named after diverse population such as China Town, Little Italy, Korea Town , Little Tokyo are few examples.  Los Angeles has the highest concentration of Mexicans outside Mexico, Koreans outside Korea, and even Samoans outside Samoa. Also Russian, Ethiopian, Armenian, and even British enclaves also coexist throughout L.A. But to call the city a "melting pot" wouldn't be quite accurate;

Los Angeles is also the home of several thousands of Ethiopians. Most Ethiopians are living city of Los Angeles but few are scattered throughout the neighboring counties, but the city of  Los Angeles Fairfax district is the central meeting place for most Ethiopians. After fierce fight and   intense campaign 13 years ago  city of Los Angeles recognized the part of Fairfax business district as Little Ethiopia, which is the first official recognition in the world. This year that landmark recognition will celebrate its 13th birth day. On Sep 14, 2014 the Los Angles Little Ethiopia Organizing committee will celebrate the 13 annual  celebration with elaborate Ethiopian shows and entertainment,

Algeria win in Ethiopia

https://www.facebook.com/ethiosportsAfrica’s standout team at the Fifa World Cup finals, Algeria, continued their dominance with a fine 2-1 win away in Ethiopia in their Africa Nations Cup Group E Qualifier.
Algeria got the best out of their trip to Addis-Ababa, taking home the full points on offer in difficult conditions and on a very poor pitch.
The Ethiopians dominated the encounter in the first half with a very strong physical presence, and Salah Eddine Said went close to give the locals the lead in the 23rd and 27th minutes.
But it was against the run of play that the Fennec Foxes opened the score in the 35th minute by Soudani (assist by Yacine Brahimi) whose cross was deflected by an Ethiopian defender into his own net.
The match was more balanced in the second half, while Algeria's keeper Rais M'Bolhi had to still make a few important saves to keep his team ahead.
The Algerians were then able to extend their lead, finding the back of the net through Yacine Brahimi in the 84th minute following an excellent solo effort by Mahrez on the left wing.
Ethiopia managed to reduce the score line in referee’s optional time when Said netted from the penalty spot. But it was too little too late for the locals as new Algeria coach Christian Gourcuff got off to a great start.
Algeria are now due to host Mali on Wednesday while Malawi are at home to Ethiopia

The best Ethiopian comedy ever, by unknown artists!

I've seen several Ethiopian comedies in  my entire life, some comedians are confused by the difference  between comedy and making fun of people's culture and way of life, in most cases  they don’t know the real boundary between insulting people and artistic expressions.  I always ask myself why these people are butchering people’s language and culture to be a comedian. I love comedy even it is a silent movie. I think comedy (if it is done properly) is a soul food for our life. Recently I've noticed several Ethiopian video clips are joining the YouTube revolution. This is really great!

Since most new TVs  (SMART TV) and DVD players are coming with YOUTUBE installed or enabled,  it is common to watch an Ethiopian video  from the comfort of our home in our TV as long as there is  aWiFi and internet access. That was the main reason  every night instead of watching regular TV my family is watching Ethiopian videos via YouTube.   For our surprise we found out that we are way behind from watching Ethiopian movies and we are doing our best to catch up with the whole Ethiopian TV/movie culture.   For now our best method or shortcut to watch Ethiopian movies is just search in Youtube by using search words or phrases like “Betoch”,”Amharic Comedy” , “Ethiopian Movie”, “Ethiopian Music”, “Zefen” and so on. By doing these search words, we are able to watch some of  best Ethiopian movies in the net. But what we've watched about few days ago is our best Amharic comedy ever we've watched for long time. The clip is only a 4:48 minutes video, unfortunately we are unable to find the rest of the movie. Now we are asking you to locate the entire version. The clip is titled “ENEYE/እንዬ "

By the way all the casting team we saw in this movie are unknown or we never seen them before, but they deserve 10 out of  10 or A++ for the following reasons.

  1. Originality = 10
  2. Authenticity   = 10
  3. Linguistic Quality   = 10
  4. Message Quality  and Delivery= 10
  5. Overall Flow =  10
  6. Body Language = 10
  7. Costume and Traditional Quality = 10
  8. Sight Selection and Backdrop = 10
  9. Camera Movement = 10
  10. Gesture and Character Assimilation = 10

Ethiopia, Kenya & Ghana bid to host 2017 Africa Cup of Nations

Ethiopia, Kenya and Ghana have announced their interest in bidding to host the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations following Libya's withdrawal as the host nation.

Libya pulled out last week because of ongoing fighting in the country that has delayed plans to build new stadiums for the 16-team tournament.

Ethiopia, who hosted the tournament in 1962, 1968 and 1976, say they will submit their proposal immediately.

Ethiopia Football Federation president Junedin Basha told BBC Sport: "We already have two ready venues, the Addis Ababa and the Bahir Dar stadiums, and the construction of the other venues has also reached to a good level.

"Our government is ready and interested to do everything it can to bring the tournament back to Ethiopia."

Kenya said in a statement that they are also considering a joint bid with Tanzania or Uganda or Rwanda.

And later on Tuesday, Ghana sports minister wrote on his Twitter page: "I am happy to announce that Ghana will bid to host the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations."

The Confederation of African Football has set a deadline of 30 September for countries to express their interest in hosting the tournament.

A decision on Libya's replacement will be made in 2015.

American, US Airways Pull Business from Orbitz

American, US Airways Pull Business from Orbitz

American, US Airways Pull Business from Orbitz
Maybe it’s only temporary.
Maybe it’s just a negotiating ploy.
Nonetheless, in an industry-shocking move Tuesday that could have a domino effect, American Airlines announced it has pulled its fares off of online travel agency Orbitz.com and its affiliates, effective immediately.
American’s merger partner, US Airways, will pull its fares from Orbitz effective Monday, Sept. 1. Combined, American and US Airways account for 25 percent of the domestic air travel market.
American said it could not come to an agreement with Orbitz on a new contract. That also might bode well for traditional travel agents, something American Airlines president Scott Kirby alluded to in a statement.
“We have worked tirelessly with Orbitz to reach a deal with the economics that allow us to keep costs low and compete with low-cost carriers,” Kirby said. “While our fares are no longer on Orbitz, there are a multitude of other options available for our customers, including brick and mortar agencies, online travel agencies, and our own websites.”
That Orbitz will not be able to sell flights on American and US Airways is not only costly to the online portal, but ironic. American was one of several airlines that invested in Orbitz when the company was created in 2000.
Orbitz downplayed the significance of American’s ploy.
“Our sites offer hundreds of airlines which are eager to capture the revenue American is choosing to forego, and we will continue to show our customers a broad range of flight options to thousands of destinations in the U.S. and worldwide,” Orbitz said in a statement.
Nonetheless, the news shook Orbitz. Shares of Orbitz Worldwide closed at $8.04 on Tuesday, down 4.63 percent – and at one point it was down more than eight percent before rallying at close.
According to the Dallas Morning News, Orbitz’s 2010 annual report noted that for American Airlines, “tickets booked on our Orbitz.com and Orbitz for Business sites, including ancillary revenue from associated hotels, car rentals, travel insurance and destination services revenue, represented approximately 5 percent of our total net revenue.”
Whether this is a negotiating tactic on the part of the airline remains to be seen. American pulled this maneuver before, in 2010, in a similar contract dispute but did eventually return its fares to the online booking agent.

Italy recovers 24 bodies in deadliest refugee days

Italy recovers 24 bodies in deadliest refugee days

ROME (AP) — Another 24 bodies were recovered Tuesday from an overturned fishing boat off Italy's southern coast as would-be refugees fleeing increasing instability in Libya saw their deadliest few days this year with more than 300 drowned.

The U.N. refugee agency said the worst incident occurred Friday near Garibouli, east of Tripoli. That boat was reportedly carrying at least 270 people when it overturned and sank. Only 19 people survived, according to Melissa Fleming, spokeswoman for the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees in Geneva.

On Tuesday, the Italian navy said two of its patrol boats recovered 24 corpses from a capsized smuggler's boat Sunday night. Their remains, as well as 364 survivors, were headed toward Augusta on Sicily's east coast.

The U.N. agency said more than 300 would-be refugees have been killed since Friday and that 1,889 have died since the start of the year, including 1,600 since the beginning of June when the influx grew exponentially as the security situation in Libya deteriorated.

More than 100,000 people have arrived in Italy so far this year thanks to increasing instability in Libya, where human smugglers operate. Some 42,000 had arrived in all of 2013. Most of the migrants hail from Eritrea, Syria, Somalia and other African nations. They pay hundreds or thousands of euros apiece to Libyan-based smugglers to make the treacherous crossing to Europe.

At a meeting Wednesday with the EU's home affairs commissioner, Italy's interior minister is expected to demand that the European Union do more to help Italy rescue the migrants. Italy launched the 9.5 million euro ($13 million) a month "Mare Nostrum" operation last year after more than 360 migrants drowned when their boat capsized off the Italian island of Lampedusa.

"As more refugees and migrants risk their lives at sea to reach Europe ... urgent action is needed including in finding legal alternatives to these dangerous journeys," Fleming said, according to a U.N. summary of her remarks.

ይሁኔ በላይ አዲስ ሙዚቃ አወጣ

Yihune Belay is one of few Ethiopian authentic  Amharic transitional singers who is still keeping his root,  now he is  ready to bless us with his new release album entitled Siyamer Chewataw". ሲያምር ጨዋታው . Yehune is becoming  the best role model for several upcoming Amharic traditional singers,  with his unique and melodically reach songs he is becoming the stepping stone for several new Ethiopian artists. One of the best quality for Yihune's artistic sophistication is his selection of lyrics and melody which pinpoints the traditional Ethiopian Amharic locales. This time instead of relaying on camera techniques  and  green-screen manipulation, Yehune traveled to Ethiopia (on-site) to shoot some of the clips  for his upcoming video release. By doing this expensive trip he is able to capture the best of the best original Amharic traditional songs  and ready to share with us. Enjoy!
