A woman has been jailed for five years for child cruelty after her two-year-old son drowned while she was checking Facebook on her phone.
Joshua Barnett died on 17 March last year after falling into a pond while playing in the garden at his home in Beverley, East Yorkshire. Wikilina or the Ethiopian Power of Attorney
Claire Barnett was criticised by the judge for her “bad parenting” and told she posed a danger to any child for whom she had responsibility during a hearing at Hull crown court on Friday.
Barnett, 31, was looking at her phone at the time of the boy’s death, it was revealed. She attempted to save the child but he died in hospital later the same day.
Barnett, who has since moved to Nottingham, was interviewed by police and gave officers varying accounts of what happened in the garden of her former home.
The court also heard how she had let Joshua play out in the road when she lived in Hull in August 2013. Neighbours contacted social services after he narrowly avoided being hit by a car. Barnett pleaded guilty to four counts of child cruelty.
Judge Jeremy Richardson told her: “Your son died due to your neglectful conduct. You will have to live with that for the remainder of your life. For a parent to behave as you did, repeatedly, amounts to consistently bad parenting.
“I trust that you will never be allowed to have further unsupervised contact to any child. If you should have any further children, they will almost certainly be removed from you.
“You pose very serious risks to any child for whom you might have responsibility.”

Ethiopian Airlines told Boeing Co in a letter that the shutdown of the U.S. Export-Import Bank raised concerns about the airline's ability to take delivery of Boeing jets already ordered and would force it to reevaluate future orders.

Boeing, which is fighting to get the trade bank reauthorized by Congress, on Thursday released the letter, saying the airline had 27 airplanes on order with a value of more than $3.8 billion at current list prices.

Ethiopian Airlines to Buy 15 to 20 Boeing 777X Jetliners, CEO Says

 Robert Wall

Ethiopian Airlines plans to place an order for Boeing Co. 777X long-range jetliners before the end of the year, the East African carrier’s chief executive said.

The airline could buy as many as 15 to 20 of Boeing’s newest airplanes after also considering the purchase of Airbus Group SE’s A350-1000 widebody, Tewolde Gebremariam said in an interview on Wednesday. The deal would have a value of $7.4 billion at list price, though buyers typically get discounts.

The Boeing plane was deemed more suited to operations from the airline’s high-altitude hub in Addis Ababa, Mr. Gebremariam said. Taking off at high altitudes and in hot weather can put a strain on aircraft performance.

The new planes, due for delivery after 2020, would replace 10 older 777 twin-engine planes and provide for growth, he said.
Boeing is developing two versions of its new long-haul plane, one that would seat around 400 passengers and a lower-capacity, ultra-long-range model dubbed the 777-8. Mr. Gebremariam said Ethiopian was opting for the lower-capacity plane that better suits Addis Ababa operations.

Ethiopian has been on a steady expansion path despite sometimes difficult market conditions. The carrier last year warned the Ebola outbreak in Africa had hit demand even though the affected regions were far from Ethiopia. In the end, the financial pain proved less dramatic, Mr. Gebremariam said, with the airline delivering a $175 million record profit at the end of its financial year in June.

This year the airline is grappling with the impact of low oil prices. Though the decline in fuel cost is a boon to the carrier by lowering operating costs, demand in African oil-exporting markets such as Nigeria and Angola has been hit, the airline chief executive said. What the impact on the full-year results may be is too early to determine, he said.

Even so, the carrier plans to introduce about 10 new aircraft this fiscal year, including the first two Airbus A350-900 widebodies next Spring. It also is adding a pair of 777 freighters and Dreamliners, he said.

ethiopia? why on earth would you go there..?

This was the common response I received from people in Australia after telling them I was moving to Ethiopia. And it seems I’m not the only one who gets this kind of response. I’ve had some good friends from home recently visit and they too were faced with the same question. The thing is not many people know much about Ethiopia. Which led me to make the below list of things you definitely wouldn’t want to come to Ethiopia and see:
It’s not like Ethiopia knows how to make damn good coffee:
(it is the birthplace of coffee after all)

The tea is just as bad (so full of spices):

And the music scene is just so boring:
Actually the nightlife in Addis is pretty lack luster:

Foodwise – there’s way too much choice for a vegetarian:

And the restaurants – so common:

Then there’s the scenery – don’t get me started on the scenery – it’s clearly terrible:imagehudad1simiens2simiens4The churches are pretty standard:

And so inaccessible – they’re either carved out of rock underground or hidden in a cave at the very highest point on top of some very steep mountains:

The endemic animals aren’t that interesting either:

The basket weaving needs a bit more colour:

There is nothing cool about an active volcano and bubbling lava pit:

Speaking of lakes, this land locked countrys’ lakes are so uninspiring:
