Navajo Nation (Diné)
Diné Bikéyah • “The People” • Sovereign Navajo Nation
Homeland: Four Corners (AZ, NM, UT)
Population: ~400,000+ enrolled citizens
Languages: Diné Bizaad (Navajo), English

The Navajo Nation, whose citizens call themselves Diné (“The People”), is the largest Native nation by land area in the United States. Navajo or Diné culture emphasizes harmony, balance, and responsibility to place. Sacred stories describe emergence into this world and define four sacred mountains as the spiritual boundary of Diné homelands. Diné weavers and silversmiths are world renowned, and traditional hogans (homes) face east to greet the first light.

In the 1860s, U.S. forces attempted to destroy Diné independence with scorched-earth tactics and the forced “Long Walk” to Bosque Redondo. Survivors negotiated a treaty in 1868 that let them return home, a powerful act of sovereignty. In World War II, Navajo Code Talkers used Diné Bizaad as an unbreakable code in the Pacific theater.

Today the Nation navigates water rights, land stewardship, health disparities, and environmental justice while investing in language immersion, renewable energy, and cultural revival led by Elders and youth.
