Ethiopian to launch new flights to Chicago and Houston? Good news..

Ethiopian to launch new flights to North America and Asia

By T3 News Network, Oct 30, 2015

Ethiopian Airlines is set to expand its network to North America and Asia next year. The expansion is made possible by the delivery of Ethiopian’s first batch of 343-seat A350-900s along with additional 270-seat Boeing 787-8s, according to a report by Centre for Aviation (CAPA).
As per the plan, New York will be Ethiopian’s fourth destination in North America joining Toronto, Washington Dulles and Los Angeles as the new flights kick off in June 2016. The report added that Ethiopian is also looking at Chicago and Houston, which could be launched in 2017.
In Asia too, the airline is planning to launch services to Chengdu (China), Ho Chi Minh (Vietnam), Jakarta (Indonesia) as well as Singapore. East Asia has been the main driver of Ethiopian’s rapid expansion in recent years – with two destinations added in 2015 for a total of nine – and will continue to be the Airline’s focus as it doubles its fleet over the next decade.

OAKLAND, Calif. – African immigrants in the Bay Area are upset that many of them have to go through a secondary review process in order to apply for a California driver’s license under AB 60.

But DMV officials say the reason some countries don’t appear on the list of acceptable passports has to do with security requirements, not geography.

At a recent forum in Oakland with DMV officials, several African immigrants said they didn’t understand why they were sent into secondary review. Attendees asked why more than half of African countries were not on the list of acceptable passports, leaving their nationals to provide more documentation in order to apply for a driver’s license.

Ekow Croffiie, an Oakland resident originally from Ghana, pulled out his passport and birth certificate, saying he had been in secondary review for months.

“Every time I call, they say, ‘You should wait for 90 days,’” said Coffie. “I’m just frustrated because I have a family, my wife doesn’t drive, and my kids have to go to school.”

Adoubou Traore, project director of the African Advocacy Network in San Francisco, has been meeting with DMV officials to answer some of the questions and concerns that he hears in his community.

“They contacted us,” Traore said about the recent forum in Oakland, one of more than 200 public forums the DMV has held across the state to provide information about how to apply for a license. Traore saw that as a hopeful sign. “It shows that there’s a will to see this issue taken care of.”

Still, he said, “You could feel people’s frustration.”

Since January 2015, the DMV has issued more than 500,000 driver’s licenses to unauthorized immigrants in California under AB 60. To be eligible, they must provide proof of identity and California residency, as well as pass all required tests.

Passports and other documents accepted by the DMV must meet all of the standards of security. This includes questions like how easy it is to forge a passport, and how the country verifies people’s identities.

Mexican nationals, whose country has a security agreement with the DMV, need only present one document to prove their identity. This can include a Mexican passport issued in 2008 or later, a Mexican consular card (matricula consular) or a 2013 Mexican federal electoral card (Instituto Federal Electoral Credencial para Votar).

A second group, including those from some other Latin American countries and those whose passports are approved by the DMV, needs to present two documents.

Those who do not fall into either of the first two groups, including nationals of many African and Asian countries, are sent to secondary review, where they are asked to provide additional documents to verify their identity.

According to the DMV, a majority of those who have been sent to secondary review in January and February have gotten approval to move forward with their application.

But Armando Botello, deputy director of the DMV’s Office of Public Affairs in Sacramento, noted that the number of applications that required a secondary review exceeded the DMV’s expectations. As a result, the wait time in some cases exceeded four months.

“To everyone who has been waiting for their secondary review,” Botello said, “we apologize and ask them to be patient.”

Traore said he plans to continue to meet with DMV officials to help more African immigrants take advantage of AB 60.

“Education is needed on both sides,” Traore said. “It’s in everyone’s interest,” he said, to allow people to apply for a driver’s license – not only for those who get a driver’s license through AB 60, but for the safety of everyone sharing the road.

Ethiopian Airlines Dreamliner declares emergency over the Atlantic after one of its engines 'shuts down'

The crew of a US-bound jet was forced to dump thousands of litres of fuel and return to Dublin after they experienced engine problems over the Atlantic.

Ethiopian Airlines flight ETH-500 left Dublin shortly after 6am on Friday but was forced to turn around an hour later.

The flight had been travelling from Addis Ababa in Ethiopia to Washington DC via Dublin. The flight arrived in Dublin at around 4.45am.

The Boeing 787-800 Dreamliner had been cruising at 40,000 feet and was about 600km northwest of Donegal when the pilot declared an emergency at about 7.30am.

The crew had been in contact with controllers at the Irish Aviation Authority’s North Atlantic Communications Service centre in Co Clare and advised them that they had to shut down one of the jet’s two engines.

The crew requested clearance to descend to 25,000ft and told controllers they would also need to dump fuel so they could land within safe weight limits.

After spending 10 minutes jettisoning fuel, the crew was asked by controllers whether they were diverting to Shannon or Dublin. The pilot opted to return to Dublin where fire and rescue crews were placed on standby.

The jet reached the airport on it’s one remaining engine and landed safely at 8.35am. The aircraft was pursued along the runway by emergency vehicles which also remained with the jet until it reached the terminal building.

Engineers are now investigating the problem.

One inbound flight was placed in a holding pattern for a short time to allow the emergency aircraft a priority landing.

Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania progress in World Cup qualifying

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (AP) - Ethiopia, Kenya and Tanzania progressed to the second round of World Cup qualifying in Africa on Sunday.
Ethiopia overcame a surprising 1-0 loss at Sao Tome and Principe in the first leg, winning 3-0 at home for a 3-1 aggregate victory. That set up a second-round meeting with Republic of Congo
Kenya had won its first-leg match 5-2 against Mauritius last week, meaning a 0-0 draw Sunday was more than enough to take the Kenyans through. They will play Cape Verde in the second round next month.
Tanzania held on for a 2-1 aggregate win over Malawi and now faces top-ranked African team Algeria.
The three were the first of 13 lower-ranked teams who will make it to Africa’s second round. The other 10 first-round matchups will be settled Tuesday.

A woman has been jailed for five years for child cruelty after her two-year-old son drowned while she was checking Facebook on her phone.
Joshua Barnett died on 17 March last year after falling into a pond while playing in the garden at his home in Beverley, East Yorkshire. Wikilina or the Ethiopian Power of Attorney
Claire Barnett was criticised by the judge for her “bad parenting” and told she posed a danger to any child for whom she had responsibility during a hearing at Hull crown court on Friday.
Barnett, 31, was looking at her phone at the time of the boy’s death, it was revealed. She attempted to save the child but he died in hospital later the same day.
Barnett, who has since moved to Nottingham, was interviewed by police and gave officers varying accounts of what happened in the garden of her former home.
The court also heard how she had let Joshua play out in the road when she lived in Hull in August 2013. Neighbours contacted social services after he narrowly avoided being hit by a car. Barnett pleaded guilty to four counts of child cruelty.
Judge Jeremy Richardson told her: “Your son died due to your neglectful conduct. You will have to live with that for the remainder of your life. For a parent to behave as you did, repeatedly, amounts to consistently bad parenting.
“I trust that you will never be allowed to have further unsupervised contact to any child. If you should have any further children, they will almost certainly be removed from you.
“You pose very serious risks to any child for whom you might have responsibility.”

Ethiopian Airlines told Boeing Co in a letter that the shutdown of the U.S. Export-Import Bank raised concerns about the airline's ability to take delivery of Boeing jets already ordered and would force it to reevaluate future orders.

Boeing, which is fighting to get the trade bank reauthorized by Congress, on Thursday released the letter, saying the airline had 27 airplanes on order with a value of more than $3.8 billion at current list prices.

Ethiopian Airlines to Buy 15 to 20 Boeing 777X Jetliners, CEO Says

 Robert Wall

Ethiopian Airlines plans to place an order for Boeing Co. 777X long-range jetliners before the end of the year, the East African carrier’s chief executive said.

The airline could buy as many as 15 to 20 of Boeing’s newest airplanes after also considering the purchase of Airbus Group SE’s A350-1000 widebody, Tewolde Gebremariam said in an interview on Wednesday. The deal would have a value of $7.4 billion at list price, though buyers typically get discounts.

The Boeing plane was deemed more suited to operations from the airline’s high-altitude hub in Addis Ababa, Mr. Gebremariam said. Taking off at high altitudes and in hot weather can put a strain on aircraft performance.

The new planes, due for delivery after 2020, would replace 10 older 777 twin-engine planes and provide for growth, he said.
Boeing is developing two versions of its new long-haul plane, one that would seat around 400 passengers and a lower-capacity, ultra-long-range model dubbed the 777-8. Mr. Gebremariam said Ethiopian was opting for the lower-capacity plane that better suits Addis Ababa operations.

Ethiopian has been on a steady expansion path despite sometimes difficult market conditions. The carrier last year warned the Ebola outbreak in Africa had hit demand even though the affected regions were far from Ethiopia. In the end, the financial pain proved less dramatic, Mr. Gebremariam said, with the airline delivering a $175 million record profit at the end of its financial year in June.

This year the airline is grappling with the impact of low oil prices. Though the decline in fuel cost is a boon to the carrier by lowering operating costs, demand in African oil-exporting markets such as Nigeria and Angola has been hit, the airline chief executive said. What the impact on the full-year results may be is too early to determine, he said.

Even so, the carrier plans to introduce about 10 new aircraft this fiscal year, including the first two Airbus A350-900 widebodies next Spring. It also is adding a pair of 777 freighters and Dreamliners, he said.

ethiopia? why on earth would you go there..?

This was the common response I received from people in Australia after telling them I was moving to Ethiopia. And it seems I’m not the only one who gets this kind of response. I’ve had some good friends from home recently visit and they too were faced with the same question. The thing is not many people know much about Ethiopia. Which led me to make the below list of things you definitely wouldn’t want to come to Ethiopia and see:
It’s not like Ethiopia knows how to make damn good coffee:
(it is the birthplace of coffee after all)

The tea is just as bad (so full of spices):

And so inaccessible – they’re either carved out of rock underground or hidden in a cave at the very highest point on top of some very steep mountains:
