The defending champion Spain failed in its attempt to win a second successive World Cup after a 2-0 defeat to Chile on Wednesday meant Vicente del Bosque's team was eliminated with one group game still to play.
The victory guaranteed progression to the knockout round of 16 for Chile. The result also meant that the Netherlands could celebrate early qualification after securing a 3-2 triumph over Australia in the day's first match. Chile will play the Netherlands on Monday to decide which team will top Group B, while Spain will face Australia in a game that is now largely meaningless for both sides.
Eduardo Vargas opened the scoring for Chile against Spain in the 20th minute after an interchange down the right flank between Alexis Sánchez and Arturo Vidal. Charles Aránguiz then cut the ball back, and Vargas kept his cool to round Iker Casillas and prod the ball home.
Just before half time, Aránguiz doubled Chile's lead after an error from Casillas, who could only punch a weak free kick from Sánchez back into the danger area. Aránguiz took a touch and punted the ball into the back of the net.
Spain had characteristically long periods of possession, but created few clear-cut chances for either Diego Costa or his substitute Fernando Torres as Chile's high-tempo pressing smothered the Spanish midfield.
Defeat for Spain meant it became the third reigning champion to be knocked out in the group stage in the last four World Cups. France dropped out at the same stage in 2002, with Italy going the same way in 2010.

አንድ ታላቅ አርፍተ ነገር ይህም አርፍተ ነገር  እንዲህ ይላል " ጥፋጥህ/ሽ እስካልተረጋግጠ ድረስ ወንጀለኛ አይደለህም /ሽም" Innocent  until proven guilty ። በጣም ከባድ አርፍተ ነገር ነው። ይህም ማለት የታሰረ ሁሉ ፍርድ እስከሚያገኝ እና ጥፋቱ እስኪገኝ  ድረስ ወንጀለኛ አይደለም። ግን በብዛት ንፁህ ግለሰቦች የሃሰት ማስርጃ ቀርቦባቸው ካለጥፋታቸው ወህኒ ቤት ሲማቅቁ ይገኛል። በሐሰት ወይም በስህተት የተፈረደባቸው ሰውች ብዙውን ጊዜ ሰሚ ጀሮ የላቸውም ከፈጣሪ በቀር። ታዲያ ወይ ጥሩ ዳኛ፣ ወይ ጎበዝ ጠበቃ ወይም ታእምር የፈጠርና እውነት ብቅ ትላለች። ያኔ ነው እንዚህ ንፁሐን ከእስር ነፃ የሚሆኑት። አንዳንዶች ሃያ/ሰላሳ አመት እድሚያቸውን ሙሉ ከእስር ማቀው ሲለቀቁ ምድር ቁና አለም ሌላ ሁና ትጥብቃቸዋለች። ትተውት የሄዱትን ኑሮ  እንደገና ከዛገበት ቦታ በማኔቤሎም ሆነ በሌላ ነገር አስነስተው ሲሄዱ መንገዱ ቀና አይሆንም። ለዚህም ነው አሜሪካ ውስጥ ያሉ ግዛቶች እንደዚህ አይንት በስህተት ሰለባ (Innocent People) ለሆኑ ንፁሃን በሂዎታቸው ማግኘት የነበረባቸውን ገቢ እንዲያገኙ ህግ ያላቸው። ለዚህም ለአንድ በስህተት ለተፈረደበት እስረኛ ብዙ ካሳ በመክፈል የታወቀችው ቴክሳስ ግዛት (State of Texas) ናት። ይህ ህግ የየግዛቶች ህግ ስለሆነ አንዳንዶቹ (20 states) ዱዲም (dime) አይከፍሉም። ለሁሉም ከዚህ በታች ያለውን አሃዝ ተመልከቱ። አንድ ቀን ይህ ህግ ኢትዮጵያም ውስጥ ሊስተገበር ይችላል።

Several states and the federal government offer $50,000 per year for people wrongly convicted in federal court. Why is that such a common figure?

Federal payments were set by a law passed a decade ago. At that time, Alabama had the highest compensation at $50,000 per year, so the feds simply decided to match that, according to Stephen Saloom, policy director at the Innocence Project. Other states may have followed the lead of the federal government.

"There doesn't seem to be any other rationale behind the number," said Paul Cates, also at the Innocence Project.

One other interesting idea: States that pay the wrongfully convicted might actually be trying to save money, according to Brandon Garrett, University of Virginia law professor and author of .

That's because people who are exonerated can sue states — and sometimes win awards on the order of $1 million per year of imprisonment, Garrett says.

In many states, people who are exonerated have to give up their right to sue in order to collect the set payment.

Policymakers may have decided that it's better for states "to encourage people to take more moderate compensation early on and maybe forgo the multimillion-dollar lawsuit," Garrett says.
