Ethiopian Airlines Dreamliner declares emergency over the Atlantic after one of its engines 'shuts down'

The crew of a US-bound jet was forced to dump thousands of litres of fuel and return to Dublin after they experienced engine problems over the Atlantic.

Ethiopian Airlines flight ETH-500 left Dublin shortly after 6am on Friday but was forced to turn around an hour later.

The flight had been travelling from Addis Ababa in Ethiopia to Washington DC via Dublin. The flight arrived in Dublin at around 4.45am.

The Boeing 787-800 Dreamliner had been cruising at 40,000 feet and was about 600km northwest of Donegal when the pilot declared an emergency at about 7.30am.

The crew had been in contact with controllers at the Irish Aviation Authority’s North Atlantic Communications Service centre in Co Clare and advised them that they had to shut down one of the jet’s two engines.

The crew requested clearance to descend to 25,000ft and told controllers they would also need to dump fuel so they could land within safe weight limits.

After spending 10 minutes jettisoning fuel, the crew was asked by controllers whether they were diverting to Shannon or Dublin. The pilot opted to return to Dublin where fire and rescue crews were placed on standby.

The jet reached the airport on it’s one remaining engine and landed safely at 8.35am. The aircraft was pursued along the runway by emergency vehicles which also remained with the jet until it reached the terminal building.

Engineers are now investigating the problem.

One inbound flight was placed in a holding pattern for a short time to allow the emergency aircraft a priority landing.

Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania progress in World Cup qualifying

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (AP) - Ethiopia, Kenya and Tanzania progressed to the second round of World Cup qualifying in Africa on Sunday.
Ethiopia overcame a surprising 1-0 loss at Sao Tome and Principe in the first leg, winning 3-0 at home for a 3-1 aggregate victory. That set up a second-round meeting with Republic of Congo
Kenya had won its first-leg match 5-2 against Mauritius last week, meaning a 0-0 draw Sunday was more than enough to take the Kenyans through. They will play Cape Verde in the second round next month.
Tanzania held on for a 2-1 aggregate win over Malawi and now faces top-ranked African team Algeria.
The three were the first of 13 lower-ranked teams who will make it to Africa’s second round. The other 10 first-round matchups will be settled Tuesday.

A woman has been jailed for five years for child cruelty after her two-year-old son drowned while she was checking Facebook on her phone.
Joshua Barnett died on 17 March last year after falling into a pond while playing in the garden at his home in Beverley, East Yorkshire. Wikilina or the Ethiopian Power of Attorney
Claire Barnett was criticised by the judge for her “bad parenting” and told she posed a danger to any child for whom she had responsibility during a hearing at Hull crown court on Friday.
Barnett, 31, was looking at her phone at the time of the boy’s death, it was revealed. She attempted to save the child but he died in hospital later the same day.
Barnett, who has since moved to Nottingham, was interviewed by police and gave officers varying accounts of what happened in the garden of her former home.
The court also heard how she had let Joshua play out in the road when she lived in Hull in August 2013. Neighbours contacted social services after he narrowly avoided being hit by a car. Barnett pleaded guilty to four counts of child cruelty.
Judge Jeremy Richardson told her: “Your son died due to your neglectful conduct. You will have to live with that for the remainder of your life. For a parent to behave as you did, repeatedly, amounts to consistently bad parenting.
“I trust that you will never be allowed to have further unsupervised contact to any child. If you should have any further children, they will almost certainly be removed from you.
“You pose very serious risks to any child for whom you might have responsibility.”

Ethiopian Airlines told Boeing Co in a letter that the shutdown of the U.S. Export-Import Bank raised concerns about the airline's ability to take delivery of Boeing jets already ordered and would force it to reevaluate future orders.

Boeing, which is fighting to get the trade bank reauthorized by Congress, on Thursday released the letter, saying the airline had 27 airplanes on order with a value of more than $3.8 billion at current list prices.
