Colorado Election: Congressman Joe Neguse celebrates Congressional District 2 win
The democrat will replace Jared Polis in the U.S. House of Representatives

Joe Neguse will be Fort Collins' next congressman.

The Democrat from Lafayette won his bid to replace U.S. Rep. Jared Polis with 64  percent of the vote as of 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, over Republican Peter Yu's 31 percent. He also faced Libertarian Roger Barris, who won 1.6 percent of the vote and independent candidate Nick Thomas, who won 3 percent.

The 2nd Congressional District covers Larimer and Boulder counties and includes Broomfield, Clear Creek, Eagle, Gilpin, Grand, Jefferson, Summit and Park counties.

Neguse, 34, will have a slew of highlights to add to his resume: He'll be Colorado's first African-American congressman, one of only a handful of first-generation Americans to serve in Congress, the youngest of Colorado's nine Congressional representatives and one of the youngest members of Congress in the nation.

“With so much vitriol right now in Washington and our political system, we must remember that, while fear is contagious, so is hope.” Neguse said in a written statement. "Tonight, I am deeply hopeful for the future of our country, as we work together to rebuild our democracy."

Neguse's platform included supporting a single-payer Medicare-for-all type plan that Polis also championed in Congress, starting impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump and protecting undocumented immigrants who arrived in the United States as children.

His parents immigrated to the United States from Eritrea, a war-torn African nation. After being granted asylum, they were naturalized as citizens. For that reason, Trump reportedly referring to nations in African as "s---hole countries" struck particularly close.

"How could I not (want to serve in Congress), when I think about my parents who immigrated to this country 35 years ago and how different their lives would be and my life would be if they tried to immigrate today," Neguse said during the primary race. "Just fundamentally, everything is at stake this election."

Colorado dad tearfully pleads guilty to murder of pregnant wife, 2 daughters
SADY SWANSON | FORT COLLINS COLORADOAN
UPDATED 13 HOURS AGO
GREELEY — A Colorado father accused of murdering his pregnant wife and two children in August pleaded guilty to nine related felony crimes Tuesday during a court appearance in Weld County.

Christopher Watts, 33, held back tears as he pleaded guilty to five counts of first-degree murder, unlawful termination of a pregnancy, and three counts of tampering with a deceased human body for the murder of his wife, Shannan, and daughters Bella and Celeste.

Of the five first-degree murder counts, two are additional counts for the children because they are younger than age 12.

Watts' voice trembled at each of his nine utterances of "guilty" as 19th Judicial District Judge Marcelo Kopcow asked Watts how he would like to plead to each count.

Weld County District Attorney Michael Rourke will not seek the death penalty in the case in exchange for Watts pleading guilty to all nine counts, the DA's office announced Tuesday.

Ilhan Omar again makes history, becoming 1st Somali-American elected to U.S. House

November 07, 2018 - 1:03 AM

Minnesota’s first Somali-American state representative has again made history: She is now the country’s first Somali-American elected to Congress.

State Rep. Ilhan Omar, a Democrat, defeated Republican Jennifer Zielinski in the race to represent the state’s Fifth District, which spans Minneapolis, Edina, Richfield, Golden Valley and other suburbs.

Omar, 36, is a vocal advocate for single-payer health care, tighter gun restrictions and more expansive immigration policies. She has captured national attention because of her life story as a refugee who made her way into elected office. She immigrated to the United States at age 12 and served as a Minneapolis City Council policy aide before winning election to the Legislature in 2016.

“Here in Minnesota, we don’t only welcome immigrants; we send them to Washington,” Omar told supporters at a victory party in Minneapolis.
