Delta Plane Loses Part of Its Wing

 

A Delta plane flying from Orlando to Atlanta lost part of its wing Sunday – but luckily, the flight landed without incident.

The panel came undone as Flight 2412 was in mid-air, leaving gears and wiring uncovered. As a precaution, the crew declared an emergency on approach, and the plane was towed to the gate after it landed, Delta spokesman Anthony Black told ABC News. No one was injured.

David Watterson, a passenger on the flight, was dozing off when he says he heard a big boom. He noticed a section of the plane's wing exposed and hydraulic fluid leaking.
"All the passengers were remarkably calm," he said. He says he did not feel any immediate danger, but it was "concerning to see a big chunk of the plane missing."
Watterson said the crew members handled the situation professionally. Officials are now inspecting the plane.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A pre-dawn earthquake rolled across the Los Angeles basin on Monday, rattling residents from the San Fernando Valley to Long Beach.
The quake's magnitude was 4.4 and it was centered 15 miles west-northwest of the downtown civic center, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Los Angeles police and fire officials said there were no immediate reports of damage.

"It rocked and rolled for about 10 or 12 seconds. I'm surprised nothing fell off the walls or broke — and nothing did — but it was quite a shaker," said Brian Bland, a retired AP Radio correspondent who lives in suburban Santa Monica.

The 6:25 a.m. quake occurred at a depth of about 5 miles.

The epicenter was near Sepulveda Pass in the Santa Monica Mountains, about 6 miles from Beverly Hills and 7 miles from Universal City, the USGS said.

All Metro rail lines were expected to experience minor delays this morning as crews inspect tracks for possible damage, according to Metro.

It was one of the largest quakes to hit Los Angeles since the 6.7-magnitude Northridge quake killed several dozen and caused $25 billion in damage two decades ago, Dr. Lucy Jones, a USGS seismologist, told KABC-TV.

"It's not that large by California terms. It's the size of earthquake we have across the state once every couple of months," Jones said. "But we haven't had one like this in LA for quite a while."

A magnitude 4.7 quake struck near Inglewood in 2009, she said.

Twenty seven coaches from around the world have sent applications for the Ethiopian coaching position left vacant after the sacking of Sewnet Bishaw in early February.
The deadline for the application was last Friday after the Ethiopian Football Federation(EFF) released a criteria for the coaches to use during the rigorous application process that took a fortnight.
Only two Ethiopians namely Wubetu Abate and Yohannes Tesema applied for the top position which saw two Italians, two Serbians, two Dutchmen and two Argentinians send their CVs. EFF President Junedin Basha intimated to supersport.com that the federation had embarked on the process of shortlisting the candidates to find the suitable person.
"We are happy with the interest shown for the vacant Ethiopian job that has seen over 27 applicants. The process of receiving applications is now closed and the Eff will immediately embark on shortlisting the coaches so that we can narrow down to the best and eventually appointed the best from the group," Junedin told supersport.com.
Among the coaches who have applied include Wubetu Abate and Yohannes Tesema(Ethiopia), Diego Garzito and Fabio Lopez(Italy), Deselegn Girma and Lars Olof Matsen(Sweden), Bonfrere Jonanes and Ernie Brandts(Netherlands), Stevanovic Goran and Ljubo Petrovic (Serbia), Lordon Stoykoc(Bulgaria), Stephen Constatine , Carlos Cavasano and Roberto Rodrigo(Argentina).
Other are; Hans Michel(Germany), Mariano Jeromino and Zoran Filipovic ([Portugal), Tom Saintfiet (Belgium), Soares Do Espinto and Claudio Roberto Silvera(Brazil), Jose Manuel Gomez (Spain), Mehmet Tayfun Turkment (Turkey),Mark Hamson, Dorian Marin (Romania) and Vladimir Sliskovic(French/Bosnia).

Ethiopian striker Salhadin Said hit a brace to lift Wadi Degla past new comers Minya 3-1 in the Egyptian Premier League on Sunday.

The 25-year international striker opened the scoring in the 28th minute before Mohab Said doubled the lead three minutes past the hour mark.

Ayman Hassanein pulled one back for Minya in the 78th minute, but Said killed any hopes of a comeback with a late goal deep in injury time.

Wadi Degla are now third in Group B with 18 points after 11 games and they still have a game in hand.

In Group A, Arab Contractors conceded another disappointed away draw against debutant Ragaa 2-2.

The Marsa Matrouh-based side grabbed the lead through Eslam Fouad after 18 minutes, but Arab Contractors responded with two quick goals from Mahmoud Ezzat, 44, and Ali Fathi, 50, to overturn their deficit.

However, Tamer Moheb gave them a huge blow after hitting the equaliser just a few seconds before the final whistle.

Arab Contractors – who had an amazing season start – have been struggling lately as they have only won once in their previous six games.

They are now third in their group with 21 points after 12 matches.

Zaharie Ahmad Shah is said to have been a devout supporter of Malaysia’s opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim. But after searching the homes of Shah and co-pilot Fariq Abdul Hamid, authorities say they have no reason to suspect the pilots of flight MH370 did anything wrong.

Their careers were flying high — until they inexplicably disappeared into a cloud of mystery.

The pilots of the missing Malaysia Airlines jet were by most accounts respected, community-minded men. But since Malaysian officials said the plane was hijacked by someone with flying experience, a fresh coat of suspicion covers the pilot and first officer.

Police were scouring their homes around the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur on Saturday, more than a week after the plane vanished. Despite the searches of the their homes, authorities say they have no reason to suspect the pilots did anything wrong.

Zaharie Ahmad Shah, 53, adored aviation, judging by his posts to message boards and social media. He joined Malaysia Airlines in 1981 and had more than 18,000 hours of flying experience.


The bald captain and grandfather was so confident in his skills in a range of areas that he posted a series of instructional YouTube videos he called “a community service.” In the videos he demonstrated how to make air conditioners more efficient, how to waterproof window panes and how to repair a refrigerator icemaker.

Shah was “very nice, very friendly and safety-conscious,” said one flight attendant, who didn’t want to be named because of company policy prohibiting employees from speaking to the media.

When not in a real airplane he flew remote-controlled ones. His collection included a lightweight, twin-engine helicopter and an amphibious aircraft. He also worked as a flight instructor, according to reports.

And in an online forum for flight simulator enthusiasts, Shah bragged about an elaborate flight simulator he built in his home in Shah Alam, outside Kuala Lumpur, that ran two complex Microsoft computer games. The setup featured three touchscreens and an imitation center console of a cockpit.


“Time to take to the next level of simulation,” he wrote. “Looking for buddies to share this passion.”

The CEO of Malaysia Airlines said Friday he saw no problem with Shah’s obsession, saying “everyone is free to do his own hobby.”

By comparison, co-pilot Fariq Abdul Hamid, 27, was a relative novice.
