China Central Television (CCTV) program has revealed that the world's largest gelatin producer, Gelita, supplies edible gelatin processed from waste leather to snack companies in China, the Beijing Times reports.
On March 15, Consumer Rights Day, a CCTV program exposed that Gelita, through its branch company in China, processes 3000 tons of waste leather into edible gelatin a year, most of which has been purchased by some large-scale Chinese snack companies, including Yake, Jinguan and Crayon.
Several other Chinese gelatin producers were also found to have purchased industrial raw material such as industrial salt, lime, soda ash and degreaser at a low price. They then used the raw material to produce the so-called edible gelatin and pharmagel, and sell the products to food and pharmaceutical factories.
During the same program, a Hangzhou-based trading companies was revealed to have changed the expiration date on many of its overdue and moldy raw food materials before selling it on to many well-known bakery enterprises including BreakTalk, Casamiel, Free Mori, and Jindian.

SIMFEROPOL, Ukraine – The Crimean parliament on Monday declared the region independent of Ukraine, a first step toward the goal backed by 96% of voters during a weekend referendum: becoming part of Russia.

The peninsula's pro-Moscow parliament adopted Moscow time as its own starting March 30, moving clocks forward two hours, and declared the Russian ruble to become the region’s official currency, though the Ukrainian hrivna will remain in circulation until Jan. 1, 2016.

A few days before the referendum, the local banks stopped serving customers and cash machines around the peninsula quickly ran out of cash.

Ukraine acting President Olexandr Turchinov called the Crimean referendum a farce orchestrated by Moscow and declared a partial military mobilization. The decision was motivated by “the continued military aggression in Crimea, which Russia is attempting to cover up,” Turchinov told his nation’s parliament in Kiev on Monday, UNIAN news agency reported.

In Crimea, Vladimir Konstantinov, speaker of the regional parliament, appealed to thousands of Ukraine army and navy officers and soldiers to join what he said was the peninsula's newly formed armed forces.

“Those who out of their conviction don't accept Crimean independence and remain loyal to Ukraine will not be prosecuted,” Konstantinov said in televised remarks Monday. “They can continue [military service] in Ukraine's army outside Crimea.”

Taxes and other payments, including pensions and social fees, will continue to be paid throughout 2014 according to Ukraine's legislation, said a statement on the regional parliament's website.

The process of joining Russia, which could begin as early as Tuesday, requires a number of procedural steps involving both houses of Russian parliament, Russian President Vladimir Putin and the Constitutional Court of the Russian Federation, Sergei Naryshkin, the speaker of Russia’s lower house of parliament, said in televised remarks Sunday night.

Crimean parliament, which renamed itself as the State Council, also created the republic's Border Service and a number of other ministries on Sunday and moved to begin nationalizing the assets of the Ukrainian government and state companies on the peninsula.

The State Council also increased the regional budget from about $600 million to about $1.2 billion upon the news that Russia was already rendering financial assistance to the breakaway region.

“Today the Russian Federation delivered the republic financial aid equal to 15 billion rubles [about $416 million],” pro-Moscow regional Premier Sergei Aksenov wrote in his Tweeter account Monday.

Delta Plane Loses Part of Its Wing

 

A Delta plane flying from Orlando to Atlanta lost part of its wing Sunday – but luckily, the flight landed without incident.

The panel came undone as Flight 2412 was in mid-air, leaving gears and wiring uncovered. As a precaution, the crew declared an emergency on approach, and the plane was towed to the gate after it landed, Delta spokesman Anthony Black told ABC News. No one was injured.

David Watterson, a passenger on the flight, was dozing off when he says he heard a big boom. He noticed a section of the plane's wing exposed and hydraulic fluid leaking.
"All the passengers were remarkably calm," he said. He says he did not feel any immediate danger, but it was "concerning to see a big chunk of the plane missing."
Watterson said the crew members handled the situation professionally. Officials are now inspecting the plane.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A pre-dawn earthquake rolled across the Los Angeles basin on Monday, rattling residents from the San Fernando Valley to Long Beach.
The quake's magnitude was 4.4 and it was centered 15 miles west-northwest of the downtown civic center, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Los Angeles police and fire officials said there were no immediate reports of damage.

"It rocked and rolled for about 10 or 12 seconds. I'm surprised nothing fell off the walls or broke — and nothing did — but it was quite a shaker," said Brian Bland, a retired AP Radio correspondent who lives in suburban Santa Monica.

The 6:25 a.m. quake occurred at a depth of about 5 miles.

The epicenter was near Sepulveda Pass in the Santa Monica Mountains, about 6 miles from Beverly Hills and 7 miles from Universal City, the USGS said.

All Metro rail lines were expected to experience minor delays this morning as crews inspect tracks for possible damage, according to Metro.

It was one of the largest quakes to hit Los Angeles since the 6.7-magnitude Northridge quake killed several dozen and caused $25 billion in damage two decades ago, Dr. Lucy Jones, a USGS seismologist, told KABC-TV.

"It's not that large by California terms. It's the size of earthquake we have across the state once every couple of months," Jones said. "But we haven't had one like this in LA for quite a while."

A magnitude 4.7 quake struck near Inglewood in 2009, she said.

Twenty seven coaches from around the world have sent applications for the Ethiopian coaching position left vacant after the sacking of Sewnet Bishaw in early February.
The deadline for the application was last Friday after the Ethiopian Football Federation(EFF) released a criteria for the coaches to use during the rigorous application process that took a fortnight.
Only two Ethiopians namely Wubetu Abate and Yohannes Tesema applied for the top position which saw two Italians, two Serbians, two Dutchmen and two Argentinians send their CVs. EFF President Junedin Basha intimated to supersport.com that the federation had embarked on the process of shortlisting the candidates to find the suitable person.
"We are happy with the interest shown for the vacant Ethiopian job that has seen over 27 applicants. The process of receiving applications is now closed and the Eff will immediately embark on shortlisting the coaches so that we can narrow down to the best and eventually appointed the best from the group," Junedin told supersport.com.
Among the coaches who have applied include Wubetu Abate and Yohannes Tesema(Ethiopia), Diego Garzito and Fabio Lopez(Italy), Deselegn Girma and Lars Olof Matsen(Sweden), Bonfrere Jonanes and Ernie Brandts(Netherlands), Stevanovic Goran and Ljubo Petrovic (Serbia), Lordon Stoykoc(Bulgaria), Stephen Constatine , Carlos Cavasano and Roberto Rodrigo(Argentina).
