There is a long history of neckwear worn by soldiers (Roman), whether as part of a uniform or as a symbol of belonging to a particular group. Some form of neckwear other than the outdoor scarf can be traced intermittently through many centuries.

The modern necktie spread by Europe traces back to the time of the Thirty Years' War (1618–1648) when Croatian mercenaries from the Croatian Military Frontier in French service, wearing their traditional small, knotted neckerchiefs, aroused the interest of the Parisians. Due to the slight difference between the Croatian word for Croats, Hrvati, and the French word, Croates, the garment gained the name "cravat/ከረባት " ("cravate/ከረባት " in French).[2] The boy-king Louis XIV began wearing a lace cravat about 1646, when he was seven, and set the fashion for French nobility. This new article of clothing started a fashion craze in Europe; both men and women wore pieces of fabric around their necks. From its introduction by the French king, men wore lace cravats, or jabots, that took a large amount of time and effort to arrange. These cravats were often tied in place by cravat strings, arranged neatly and tied in a bow.

International Necktie Day is celebrated on October 18 in Croatia and in various cities around the world, e.g. in Dublin, Tübingen, Como, Tokyo, Sydney and other towns.[3][4

A charity worker who spent £5,000 bringing his new Jamaican bride to the UK was left heartbroken after she abandoned him within 20 minutes of walking through his front door.
Johnny Gannon spent thousands arranging a visa for 24-year-old Patrice Chambers so they could live in marital bliss in his council flat in Perth, Scotland.
But as soon as Patrice arrived in Perth, she sent trusting Mr Gannon, 57, out to buy Pot Noodles. When he returned she grabbed her bags and told him she was going.
Within 20 minutes of arriving through his front door she had flagged down a car and caught a train. He found out she had also run up a £500 bill on his mobile phone.
Heartbroken Mr Gannon, who married Patrice in Jamaica early this year, believes his new wife fled to Bristol to meet a Jamaican boyfriend with whom she had organised the scheme.
He told the Daily Mirror: 'I was looking forward to spending the rest of my life with Patrice but I think she had planned all along to do this.

'My relationship with her wasn’t something I’d done by mail order. I’ve known her for two years and it seemed very much like the real thing to me. She has used me and I feel humiliated.
'I had a vision of happiness laid out. I feel like a bit of a fool.'
Mr Gannon takes regular holidays in Jamaica and met Patrice there two years ago.
A friend set them up on a blind date but despite the 33-year age gap he fell in love with her after their first meeting in a romantic bar in the resort of Treasure Beach.
As the couple watched dophins playing in the water he believed he had found the girl of his dreams.
'She ran a little bar and I'd hang out with her there,' he said. 'She was intelligent and I myself thought she had the potential to be a great life partner.

BURKA AND ESHETU MAKE IT AN ETHIOPIAN DOUBLE IN SYDNEY AS COURSE RECORDS FALL

Gebo Burka and Biruktayit Eshetu came into the Blackmores Sydney Marathon with contrasting form lines, but both emerged as winners to complete a double victory for Ethiopia in the IAAF Silver Label Road Race on Sunday (21).

Eshetu was the defending women’s champion and won like a champion should, taking down her own course record in the process despite suffering some discomfort from leg cramps in the closing stages of the race.

Burka crept into the race almost unnoticed, with others up to four minutes faster than him on best times. But the 27-year-old had already won marathons in Pittsburgh and Los Angeles this year and he showed that winning form is good form as he broke clear of compatriot Seboka Tola over the last five kilometres of the Sydney course.

It was cool and light rain was falling as the runners were called to the line in Milsons Point, just to the north of Sydney’s landmark Harbour Bridge. It remained overcast all the way to the finish line on the Opera House forecourt on the southern side of the bridge, good conditions for the 4000 competitors in the marathon and the 30,000 more in the associated Sydney Running Festival events.

An early lead group of about 10 as the runners crossed the iconic bridge was gradually whittled down to five by the half-way point in Centennial Park. Burka was there, though his 2:10:18 personal best did not augur well for his chances against his companions Tola (2:06:17), Sisay Jisa (2:06:27) and Kenya’s Benjamin Kiptoo (2:06:31). Also there was Japan’s Tsuyoshi Ugachi, whose modest 2:13:41 previous best was backed up with 27:40 track 10,000m credentials.

Yet it was Burka’s aggression which dropped Jisa and then reduced the leading group to two pairs – Burka and Tola in front, Kiptoo and Ugachi battling for third place some 30 seconds behind.

Inside the last five kilometres, Burka forged a gap of some 15 metres on Tola. Briefly, it looked as if the faster man was biding his time before launching his own attack, but in the final stages the gap grew from 20 metres, to 50 and 100.

It now became a race against the clock, with Burka chasing Yuki Kawauchi’s course record of 2:11:52 set two years ago. He won that battle, too, crossing the line in 2:11:18, 30 seconds clear of Tola. Kiptoo was third in 2:12:08, some 10 seconds ahead of Ugachi, the only one of the first four to run a personal best.

“I’m very glad with today’s result,” the winner said. “My trainer was aware of the race record and it was something he reminded me of before the start.”

Kenya’s Erick Wainana, a top-10 finisher in three consecutive Olympic marathons, topped by a silver medal at the Sydney 2000 Games, finished in 10th place.

There was no question that Biruktayit Eshetu was the favourite for the women’s race. The fastest of the four entrants with sub-2:30 credentials, she had finished fourth in Houston at the start of the year in 2:26:22.

The doubt was whether the 32-year-old Ethiopian could produce a winning performance in her fifth marathon of the year, just eight weeks to the day since winning in Eugene in 2:33:15.

Eshetu could, and she did. Despite slowing noticeably in the final three kilometres, she was always well clear and never threatened by second-place finisher Jane Kiptoo of Kenya, who also felt the strain in the closing stages.

The last few kilometres of any marathon make subtle demands on the body, demands scarcely noticed over shorter distances.

As marathon runners negotiate their way around Sydney’s Circular Quay to the Opera House finish, tired legs and feet have to cope with surface changes from road, to boardwalk, to paving stones, to road again and then back to paving.

Eshetu was clearly hurting, but she had so much time and distance up her sleeve that she was still able to finish in 2:29:42, some three minutes faster than the 2:32:46 record she had set the previous year.

Kiptoo, second in 2:32:08, was also under the previous mark. Japan’s Yuka Yano was third in 2:33:19.

“I was quite sure I could improve last year’s record,” said Eshetu. “I was able to set the pace, making my move at the 15km mark. However, I could feel my right leg cramping up in the final two kilometres.”

The leg held up, the record did not.

Boeing, Ethiopian Airlines Announce Order for 20 737 MAX 8s

HEADLINE2Order is the largest single Boeing order by number of airplanes from an African carrier

CHICAGO, Sept. 20, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing [NYSE: BA] and Ethiopian Airlines today announced an order for 20 737 MAX 8s. The order, previously unidentified on the Boeing Orders & Deliveries website, is worth more than $2.1 billion at list prices and also includes options and purchase rights for a further 15 737 MAX 8s. The order represents the largest single Boeing order by number of airplanes from an African carrier.
"Today's order underlines our commitment to our 15-year strategic plan, 'Vision 2025', in which Ethiopian will strive to become the leading airline group in Africa carrying 18 million passengers per annum," said Tewolde Gebremariam, CEO of Ethiopian Airlines, during a visit to the Association for the Promotion of Tourism to Africa National Forum in Chicago. "The 737 MAX will form a key component of that strategic vision, enhancing our single-aisle fleet and keeping us at the forefront of African aviation."
The 737 MAX incorporates the latest technology CFM International LEAP-1B engines, Advanced Technology winglets and other improvements to deliver the highest efficiency, reliability and passenger comfort in the single-aisle market. The 737 MAX will be 14 percent more fuel-efficient than today's most efficient Next-Generation 737s – and 20 percent better than the original Next-Generation 737s when they first entered service. The 737 MAX has a total of 2,294 orders from 47 customers worldwide.
"This historic order for Boeing and our partner Ethiopian once again positions the carrier at the heart of African aerospace innovation with the acquisition of the 737 MAX," said Van Rex Gallard, vice president of Sales for Latin America, Africa and the Caribbean, Boeing Commercial Airplanes, speaking in Chicago. "Throughout the years, Ethiopian has consistently led the way in introducing new airplane types to passengers across Africa. Today's record order signals its commitment to continue that tradition."
Ethiopian currently serves more than 83 destinations across five continents from its base at Bole International Airport in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa. The Ethiopian flag carrier's partnership with Boeing has existed for more than half a century, with a current fleet of more than 50 Boeing airplanes that includes Next-Generation 737s, 757s, 767s, 777s, 787 Dreamliners and a cargo fleet of 757s, 777 Freighters and MD-11s.

Scotland Rejects Independence From Britain in a Close Vote

EDINBURGH — Voters in Scotland rejected independence from Britain in a referendum that had threatened to break up the 307-year union between them, according to projections by the BBC and Sky News early Friday.
Before dawn after a night of counting that showed a steady trend in favor of maintaining the union, Nicola Sturgeon, the deputy head of the pro-independence Scottish National Party, effectively conceded defeat for the “yes” campaign that had pressed for secession.
“Like thousands of others across the country I’ve put my heart and soul into this campaign and there is a real sense of disappointment that we’ve fallen narrowly short of securing a yes vote,” Ms. Sturgeon told BBC television.
With 26 of 32 voting districts reporting, there were 1,397,077 votes, or 54.2 percent, against independence, and 1,176,952, or 45.7 percent, in favor.

At that point the tally seemed wider than opinion surveys had suggested but it gave pro-independence campaigners a strong platform to press for greater powers and autonomy for Scotland promised by British political leaders during the campaign.
The outcome was a deep disappointment to the vocal, enthusiastic pro-independence movement led by the Scottish first minister, Alex Salmond, who had seen an opportunity to turn a centuries-old nationalist dream into reality, and forced the three main British parties into panicked promises to grant substantial new power to the Scottish Parliament.
The decision spared Prime Minister David Cameron of Britain a shattering defeat that would have raised questions about his ability to continue in office and diminished his nation’s standing in the world.
But while the result preserved a union molded in 1707, it left Mr. Cameron facing a backlash among some of his Conservative Party lawmakers. They were angered by the promises of greater Scottish autonomy that he and other party leaders made just days before the vote, when it appeared that the independence campaign might win. Some lawmakers called for similar autonomy for England itself, and even the creation of a separate English Parliament.
The outcome headed off the huge economic, political and military imponderables that would have flowed from a vote for independence. But it also presaged a looser, more federal United Kingdom. And it was unlikely to deter Scottish nationalists from trying again.
he passion of the campaign also left Scots divided, and Mr. Salmond was expected to call later on Friday for reconciliation after a vibrant exercise in democracy that had episodes of harshness and even intimidation.
President Obama had made little secret of his desire that the United Kingdom remain intact. Indeed, Britain had long prided itself on a so-called special relationship with the United States, and Britain’s allies had been concerned by, among other things, Mr. Salmond’s vow to evict Britain’s nuclear submarine bases from Scotland, threatening London’s role in Western defenses.
As the vote approached, the margin between the two camps narrowed to a few percentage points, and at one point, the “yes” campaign seemed to have the momentum.
That was enough to alarm Britain’s political leaders from the three main parties in the Westminster Parliament in London. In a rare show of unity, they promised to extend significant new powers of taxation to Scotland, while maintaining a formula for public spending that many English voters saw as favoring Scots with a higher per-capita contribution.
Voters remained divided to the very end.
