A pair of Sterling College alumni who have long served as missionaries in Ethiopia were injured last week when armed bandits shot at their vehicle.
According to the Presbyterian Mission Agency, John and Gwen Haspels are recovering after being attacked while traveling to help build a house in Moga
Reports indicate John Hapsels drove four hours to the nearest hospital after bandits shot at their car. He suffered injuries to his eye and was grazed by several bullets. Gwen was in surgery for seven hours and has been placed in a medically induced state of sedation to alleviate stress on her body. They have been moved to a facility in South Africa, and both were last reported in good condition.
Hunter Farrell, director of Presbyterian World Mission, said in a report that the attack was a "random act of violence" and the couple was not targeted.
The couple have served in Ethiopia since 1974. John Haspels was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and grew up in Ethiopia, while Gwen was born and raised in Sudan. Both attended high school in Alexandria, Egypt, before graduating from Sterling College – John in 1969 and Gwen in 1970. Last year, the college honored the Haspelses with the 2013 Distinguished Service Award for their years of missionary work.
The attack comes 31 years after John Haspels was taken hostage by Sudanese guerrillas and held captive for 15 days, according to previous reports in The News.

The huge cyberattack on JPMorgan Chase that touched more than 83 million households and businesses was one of the most serious computer intrusions into an American corporation. But it could have been much worse.
Questions over who the hackers are and the approach of their attack concern government and industry officials. Also troubling is that about nine other financial institutions — a number that has not been previously reported — were also infiltrated by the same group of overseas hackers, according to people briefed on the matter. The hackers are thought to be operating from Russia and appear to have at least loose connections with officials of the Russian government, the people briefed on the matter said.
It is unclear whether the other intrusions, at banks and brokerage firms, were as deep as the one that JPMorgan disclosed on Thursday. The identities of the other institutions could not be immediately learned.
The breadth of the attacks — and the lack of clarity about whether it was an effort to steal from accounts or to demonstrate that the hackers could penetrate even the best-protected American financial institutions — has left Washington intelligence officials and policy makers far more concerned than they have let on publicly. Some American officials speculate that the breach was intended to send a message to Wall Street and the United States about the vulnerability of the digital network of one of the world’s most important banking institutions.
“It could be in retaliation for the sanctions” placed on Russia, one senior official briefed on the intelligence said. “But it could be mixed motives — to steal if they can, or to sell whatever information they could glean.”
The JPMorgan hackers burrowed into the digital network of the bank and went down a path that gave them access to information about the names, addresses, phone numbers and email addresses of account holders. They never made it into where the more critical financial information and personal information are stored.
The bank’s security team, which first discovered the attack in late July, managed to block the hackers before they could compromise the most sensitive information about tens of millions of JPMorgan customers, said several security experts and others briefed on the matter. The attack was not completely halted until the middle of August and it was only in recent days that the bank began to tally its full extent.
American officials say they have been working with JPMorgan since the intrusion was detected, chiefly through the Treasury, the Secret Service and intelligence agencies that seek to find the source of the attacks. But that is slow work and one official cautioned against leaping to conclusions about the identities or the motives of the attackers.
“We’ve been wrong before,” he said.

The footage shows ABC correspondent Dr. Richard Besser observing health workers while they douse the body of a suspected Ebola patient lying on the streets of the Liberian capital Monrovia with bleach, a regular precaution while removing bodies to prevent the spread of the disease. The workers place the suspected victim in a body bag. Then, his hand moves.
"He's not dead!" Besser exclaims, to the cheers of a crowd of Liberians.
Residents told Besser they had spent days unsuccessfully seeking help for the man as he lay suffering on the road. The burial team, however, arrived within an hour of the victim's reported death. "They only come when you die," one community leader told the news crew.
One of three countries battling Ebola in West Africa, Liberia has been hardest hit by the outbreak, with nearly 2,000 recorded deaths from the virus. The country's beleaguered health system has been overwhelmed by the crisis. Liberia has a dire shortage of hospital beds and international efforts to help have struggled keep pace with Ebola's spread.
Richard Besser, who is ABC's chief health and medical editor, was the first journalist permitted to film inside Liberia's Ebola Isolation Unit, ELWA2. He told The Huffington Post earlier that the Ebola outbreak in West Africa is the most devastating he's ever seen anywhere in the world.

Ethiopia drops bid for 2017 African Cup
ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (AP) — Ethiopia has dropped its bid to host the 2017 African Cup of Nations, and will focus instead on the next available tournament in 2025, the president of the country's football federation said.Junedin Basha said the East African country decided against running as the replacement for Libya after meeting with Confederation of African Football officials.
CAF wants a country with already-established facilities to step in at short notice for 2017 after Libya withdrew as host in August because of security and organizational concerns. Ethiopia's bid revolved around building new stadiums.
CAF executives "advised" Ethiopia to delay its bid, Junedin said.
Zimbabwe and Algeria say they have submitted formal bids to host the 2017 tournament, while other candidates could include Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania and Egypt. The deadline for bids to be lodged was Tuesday.
Morocco will stage the next 16-team African Cup in January and February. Cameroon, Ivory Coast and Guinea have been named as hosts for 2019, 2021 and 2023 respectively.
CAF said it will name the 2017 host early next year.

"Ethiopia received a request from former President Saleh to reside there and it accepted the request on the condition that he does not partake in any political activities during his stay on its territory," the site continued.
Al-Quds Al-Arabi quoted informed sources as saying that the Houthis besieging Saleh's home after the fall of Sanaa. He received threats from militants who want revenge for the six wars that took place during his reign against the group between 2004 and 2010; the first of which lead to the death of the founder of the Houthis, Hussein Badreddin Al-Houthi, in Saada.

Applicants must submit entries electronically during this registration period using the electronic DV entry form (E-DV) at dvlottery.state.gov. Paper entries will not be accepted. All entrants must print and retain their online confirmation page after completing their DV entries so that they will be able to check their entry status. We strongly encourage applicants not to wait until the last week of the registration period to enter. Heavy demand may result in website delays. No entries will be accepted after noon EST on November 3, 2014.
The congressionally mandated Diversity Visa Program is administered on an annual basis by the Department of State and conducted under the terms of Section 203(c) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA). Section 131 of the Immigration Act of 1990 (Pub. L. 101-649) amended INA 203 provides for a class of immigrants known as “diversity immigrants.” Sections 201(e) and 203(c) of the INA provide a maximum of 55,000 Diversity Visas each fiscal year to be made available to persons from countries with low rates of immigration to the United States; however, since DV-1999, Congress has set aside 5,000 of this annual allocation to be made available for use under the Nicaraguan and Central American Relief Act (NACARA).
The annual DV program makes visas available to persons meeting the simple, but strict, eligibility requirements. A computer-generated, random drawing chooses selectees for Diversity Visas. The visas are distributed among six geographic regions, with a greater number of visas going to regions with lower rates of immigration, and with no visas going to nationals of countries sending more than 50,000 immigrants to the United States over the period of the past five years. No single country may receive more than seven percent of the available Diversity Visas in any one year.
For DV-2016, natives of the following countries are not eligible to apply because the countries sent more than 50,000 immigrants to the United States in the previous five years: BANGLADESH, BRAZIL, CANADA, CHINA (mainland-born), COLOMBIA, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC, ECUADOR, EL SALVADOR, HAITI, INDIA, JAMAICA, MEXICO, NIGERIA, PAKISTAN, PERU, PHILIPPINES, SOUTH KOREA, UNITED KINGDOM (except Northern Ireland) and its dependent territories, and VIETNAM.
A “native” ordinarily means someone born within a particular country, regardless of the individual's current country of residence or nationality. Persons born in Hong Kong SAR, Macau SAR, and Taiwan are eligible.
The Department of State implemented the electronic registration system beginning with DV-2005 in order to make the DV process more efficient and secure. We utilize special technology and other means to identify those who commit fraud for the purposes of illegal immigration or those who submit multiple entries.
For DV-2016, the Department of State will once again implement an online process to notify entrants of their selection, and to provide information about the immigrant visa application and interview. Beginning May 5, 2015, DV-2016 entrants will be able to use their unique confirmation number provided at registration to check online through Entry Status Check at dvlottery.state.gov to see if their entry was selected. Successful entrants will receive instructions for how to apply for immigrant visas for themselves and their eligible family members.
Confirmation of visa interview appointments will also be made through Entry Status Check.
