How the Missing Malaysia Airlines Jet Could Have Been Hijacked

In the hours after Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 vanished, the notion that hijackers were responsible seemed far-fetched. Since the 9/11 attacks, commercial pilots have been trained to prevent the weaponization of their planes by never unlocking their cockpit doors for hijackers–even if the lives of passengers are being threatened. Even if the MH370 captain or first officer broke with official policy and opened the door, why wouldn’t one of them first use the jet’s transponder to squawk “7500,” the universal code for a hijacking in progress?

Another possibility was that a crew member was the culprit, much like the Ethiopian Airlines pilot who recently diverted his Boeing 767 to Geneva in search of political asylum. But assuming the motive in such a caper would be escape to a foreign land, the pilot-turned-hijacker would have no clear reason to shut down the plane’s communications systems; doing so would vastly complicate his journey. Early on, then, the smart money was on the disappearance being the result of a catastrophic mechanical failure had caused the plane to plummet from the sky, and that it was only a matter of time before bits of wreckage started to wash ashore.

In recent days, however, several telling snippets of information have emerged that make a hijacking harder to rule out. As the Wall Street Journal first reported, the Boeing 777-200ER’s Rolls-Royce engines appear to have kept transmitting maintenance data for five hours after the jet’s transponder went dead. Reuters later added that military radar had tracked the flight as it seemed to head for the Andaman Islands. Most intriguingly, there are indications the plane’s transponder and data-reporting system were switched off at different times, which, if true, provide solid evidence that a human hand was involved in silencing the aircraft.

With the hijacking theory growing more plausible by the hour, it’s time to wonder how such an epic crime might have occurred–and how it might have ended far more tragically than its perpetrator envisioned.

If MH370 was seized by passengers or a crew member, the hijacking would the third so far this year—in addition to the Ethiopian Airlines episode, there also was the bizarre Pegasus Airlines incident of early February, in which an apparently intoxicated Ukrainian man demanded passage to Sochi but was instead taken to Istanbul. This clustering of hijackings shouldn’t be surprising. The crime always has been highly viral in nature; each hijacking tends to be influenced by the last, in terms of modus operandi or other key details. A perfect example of this phenomenon is how “parajacking”–hijackings in which the criminal flees by jumping out of the plane–evolved in the early 1970s. Though most folks only remember the infamous D.B. Cooper hijacking of November 1971, there were numerous other incidents in the ensuing months in which the hijackers became increasingly more adept at getting away from the authorities–at least for a few days. (Cooper himself may have been a copycat, inspired by a farcical Air Canada hijacking.) Perhaps one of MH370’s pilots had been inspired by the Ethiopian Airlines hijacking, and thought he could fly his way to a better life on distant shores.

It also is important to remember that, unlike the highly organized 9/11 terrorists, most hijackers through history have been scatterbrained, sometimes to a comic degree. In the midst of manic episodes or afflicted by paranoia, they often can be quite good at planning minor details of their crimes, yet quite deluded about how the endgames will play out. This certainly was the case with Roger Holder, the principal hijacker of Western Airlines Flight 701 in June 1972. An Army veteran who had served four tours in Vietnam, Holder cooked up a clever ruse by which he convinced the crew that he was accompanied by four members of the Weathermen, at least one of whom was armed with a bomb. But he also hijacked a short-range Boeing 727 by accident, thereby making it impossible for him to reach his intended destination of Hanoi.

If MH370’s hijacker was in a mental state similar to Holder’s, he or she might have had the psychological wherewithal to figure out how to disable the plane’s communications systems, but not to realize that reaching, say, Western Europe was not a feasible goal. The hijacking could even have been an impulsive act, as many such crimes were during America’s “golden age” or air piracy. Ricardo Chavez Ortiz, for example, who commandeered a Frontier Airlines jet in order to get a radio crew to broadcast his rambling 34-minute speech, claimed to have decided to hijack the plane only after it reached cruising altitude.

Though data points may be accumulating in favor of the hijacking theory, it remains difficult to believe that MH370 is now in the possession of a global terror network that plans to use it in a future attack; landing and hiding a Boeing 777-200ER–a 209-foot-long aircraft with a 200-foot wingspan–in a lawless corner of the world would require immense resources, not to mention luck. In fact, there’s a good chance that any hijacker of the flight was not motivated by any sort of radical ideology, but rather by personal woes. In the history of air piracy, the vast majority of hijackers have been men or women who, though they may have claimed political affiliations, were most interested in fleeing from desperate circumstances: economic hardships, legal entanglements, love affairs gone wrong. In the era before everyone had to pass through metal detectors and have their carry-on luggage screened, hijacking a plane was an easy and spectacular way to try and alter one’s fortunes. One young American hijacker, who tried to flee to Cuba with her boyfriend in the late 1960s, neatly summed up that mindset when later asked why she had opted for such a risky crime: “Something had to be done–and I did something, for better or worse. It [was] better than eighteen years of therapy, or whatever. It just seemed like the answer.”

On one level, it’s comforting to think that a hijacker of MH370 was not bent on using the plane as a weapon of mass destruction, but rather wanted to start life anew somewhere else. But it’s also frightening to imagine a world where, as in the early 1970s, the desperate and deluded increasingly start to view hijacking as a reasonable solution to their problems.

Since Malaysian Airlines Flight 370 disappeared mysteriously, theories have flown left and right, but now NASA will join the effort to obtain concrete evidence and ultimately find the plane.

NASA began exploring ways it could aid the search effort since March 10, Space.com reported, three days after the plane took off. In the middle of its flight, the Boeing 777 plane and its 239 passengers disappeared for unknown reasons and has yet to be found

"Activities under way include mining data archives of satellite data acquired earlier and using space-based assets, such as the Earth-Observing-1(EO-1) satellite and the ISERV camera on the International Space Station, to acquire new images of possible crash sites," NASA spokesman Allard Beutel told Space.com in a written statement. "The resolution of images from these instruments could be used to identify objects of about 98 feet (30 meters) or larger."

After numerous radar blips and other clues have led nowhere, investigators from 13 different countries have the suspicion of foul play in the backs of their minds.

FlightRadar24.com tracks live air traffic and monitors about 120,000 flights per day. The site's co-founder Mikael Robertsson told the Los Angeles Times "somebody did something deliberate" to make the plane disappear.

"If you asked me six days ago what happened, I'd say the plane probably broke apart," he said. "But now they've been searching with 100 boats and aircraft and they've found nothing, which is pointing more to the theory that somebody flew the plane in another direction."

A source who wished to remain anonymous told Reuters Friday that sabotage and hijacking are on the minds of Malaysian investigators.

"What we can say is we are looking at sabotage, with hijack still on the cards," said the source, a senior Malaysian police official.

One piece of evidence pointing to an intentional act is the fact that the plane's transponder was turned off 40 minutes after takeoff. Robertsson told the LAT the only thing that makes the transponder turn off is if someone did it deliberately or in the event of the plane's destruction.

Reuters' sources have indicated that the search will soon be shifted to the Andaman Sea and Indian Ocean in light of new evidence.

Investigators agree that if the plane did not crash, someone had to have turned off the plane's communication systems, which indicates foul play. No one will have any answers until the plane or its debris are located, a search NASA hopes to help end.

The most famous Kardashian of them all: Janetta Kardashian. She is the most famous, right? If not, it was an honest mistake and I’m not at all trolling you. Let’s continue. Janetta Kardashian and her 7-year-old daughter stopped in at a New York City Starbucks last month. Sitting down at a table together,Ms. Kardashian took off her $15,000 mink coat and draped it on her chair. As DNAinfo New York reports, it would be the last time she’d see it.

It’s certainly a shame for Ms. Kardashian to have lost her coat, aside from the worth, she brought it over to the US from her native Russia 2 years ago, meaning it’s not something you just pop over to your local mall to buy. However, she’s taking the loss in stride. As she told DNAinfo, she won’t, “cry over things that won’t cry over me.” She’s mostly just stunned that someone managed to snag it without anybody noticing.

Perhaps Janetta can be calm about the loss of one mink coat because of her vast collection at home. She told the blog she has more than 40 furs at home. You might be asking, “Is she fur real?” That’s a fur question to ask. It makes more sense though if you know that she runs a luxury vintage clothing store online.

It doesn’t seem like the crime will be solved. Ms. Kardashian said police were skeptical of her coat’s value but that, "they saw my last name and they were just friendly."

(CNN) -- It's a mystery that authorities still haven't been able to solve: Where is Malaysia Airlines Flight 370?
There were still more questions than answers Thursday as U.S. officials said investigators will start combing the Indian Ocean as they look for the missing aircraft.
Why would authorities expand their search rather than narrowing it?
New information, U.S. officials told CNN, indicates the missing airplane could have flown for several hours beyond the last transponder reading.
Malaysian authorities believe they have several "pings" from the airliner's service data system, known as ACARS, transmitted to satellites in the four to five hours after the last transponder signal, suggesting the plane flew to the Indian Ocean, a senior U.S. official told CNN. That information combined with known radar data and knowledge of fuel range leads officials to believe the plane may have made it to that ocean, which is in the opposite direction of the plane's original route.

2-year-old in Jacksonville, Fla., will have to start doing some chores now to pay off the $4 "ticket" she received Tuesday from police officers while driving her white convertible toy car around her apartment complex.

The good news for the toddler, Za'Dariyah, is that the scribbling and drawings her mother says she has been making on the ticket won't be held against her in court.

The driving infraction against Za'Dariyah was given in fun by a few good-natured officers with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office who were responding to a call at the same apartment complex where Za'Dariyah lives with her family.

The officers saw an opportunity to defuse the situation when they saw Za'Dariyah cruising around the parking lot.

"Everybody got a bad perception of the police … and the police was real nice when they came along," said Za'Dariyah's uncle Keyth Mishaw, who took photos of his niece's first "ticket" and sent them to First Coast News.

The photos went viral on the station's Facebook page - garnering 3 million views, 150,000 likes and 17,000 shares - and Mishaw, Za'Dariyah and her mother, Zumekia, were interviewed live on the News' 7 p.m. broadcast Tuesday night, even bringing Za'Dariyah's white convertible with them.

"I'm still in shock right now about it all," Zumekia, whose last name was not released, said of the attention her daughter's pictures have received.

Though the ticket is fake, Za'Dariyah was "bumping into some cars" while driving the convertible for the first time, her uncle said.

"She was just actually doing her little driving thing and they [said], 'She deserves a ticket. She deserves a ticket,'" Mishaw said of the officers.

"We had fun with it and my family had a good time with it," Mishaw said. "I want to say hey to the officer. He made a real good something out of nothing."

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office has not responded to requests for comment.

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — The search for a missing jetliner has been expanded well west of its last reported position, toward India, six days after it vanished an hour after taking off for Beijing.
White House press secretary Jay Carney said Thursday that some searchers were being shifted hundreds of miles west of Malaysia, far off course from the intended flight path of the jet.
"It is my understanding the one possible piece of information, or pieces of information, has led to the possibility that a new search area may be opened up over the Indian Ocean," said Carney, who added that U.S. government "may be allocating" resources to that area to take part in the search.
Meanwhile, Malaysia's acting Transport Minister Hishammuddin Hussein dismissed as "inaccurate" Thursday a report that claimed, based on engine data, that missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 may have flown for four hours following its last communication with air-traffic control.
Hishammuddin acknowledged that it is possible that the plane continued flying for a period of time but said a report in the Wall Street Journal stating that engine data from the jetliner continued to transmit information even after the plane lost contact with airport authorities was not correct.
However, he said, "We have not ruled out the possibility that it has flown on."
The last data transmitted from the engines was received at 1:07 a.m. Saturday on the day the plane with 239 people on board vanished, and indicated that "everything is operating normally," said Malaysia Airlines CEO Ahmad Jauhari Yahya.
Rolls-Royce, the engine maker, and Boeing, the plane manufacturer, also confirmed that no further data were received from the engines, he said. The last civilian radar signal came at 1.30 a.m. Saturday.
In another dramatic twist in the search-and-rescue efforts now into their sixth day, Hishammuddin said that satellite images released Wednesday by China are not debris from the plane.
The murky images showed what might have been three pieces of debris of significant size, leading to a fruitless search Thursday by Malaysian aircraft in the area indicated, which matched the expected flight path.
Chinese authorities later explained the image release was an accident, and did not show Flight 370 plane debris, said Hishammuddin. The publication on an official Chinese government agency website was a result of "personal behavior which is now under investigation," and was not authorized nor endorsed by the Chinese government, he said, reading from a statement from the Chinese Embassy to Malaysia.
The statement echoed remarks earlier from Li Jiaxing, China's civil aviation chief, that China could not confirm the debris pictured was from the missing plane.
Hishammuddin again defended the Malaysian authorities' response to what he called an "unprecedented" and "crisis" situation.
"We have not done anything that would jeopardize this search effort. … Malaysia has nothing to hide. We have spared no expense and no effort" in a search that he said has expanded to include 43 ships and 40 aircraft, operating on both sides of the Malaysian peninsula.
The original flight plan ran up the east side of the peninsula, over the South China Sea, but the search was extended in recent days to the west side — the Straits of Malacca — after military radar indicated the possibility of a plane making a turn back and flying into that area.
The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration and the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board reviewed the data and agreed with Malaysian authorities that there were "reasonable grounds" to search on the western side of peninsular Malaysia, he said.
Malaysia would not ordinarily release raw data from its military radars, but "in this case we have put the search effort above our national security," and shared data with the USA, China and others, said Hishammuddin.
Like conversations around the world, the plane's fate and mysterious disappearance is dominating discussions in Malaysia. "Maybe it was black magic," said Hairul Nizam, 37, a taxi driver at Kuala Lumpur International Airport. "Why was there no electrical signal from the plane? All our phones give off signals. The U.S. has such good technology, but they cannot find it," he said.
"Maybe there is some news hidden from the people," suggested his friend Zuherrdy Nasution, a sailor from Indonesia who lives in Kuala Lumpur. The most common explanations he had heard involved hijacking or sabotage. Both defended the national carrier, Malaysia Airlines, that Nasution was set to fly on Thursday afternoon.
"It is still a good airline, and the Malaysian government is trying its best," said Nizam.
At the airport's main viewing area, visitors have written hundreds of hopes and prayers on specially prepared sheets and white boards. "Sometimes miracle takes time … surely you will all come home safe — don't lose hope," read one.
Nearby, KFC employee Hakimi Yusoff took his lunch break Thursday and said Islam would help Malay families deal with their loss. "It was fate, from God, and we must accept the fate of God," said Hakimi Yusoff, 18.

ኬንያ ኢትዮጵያ ውስጥ በባንክ ንግድ ልትሰማራ ነው። Ethiopia gives green light to Kenyan banks to open office

Ethiopian Parliament passed the Special Status Agreement between the governments of Ethiopia and Kenya yesterday (March 11, 2014), which among others gives green light to Kenyan banks to open their offices in Ethiopia.

The agreement signed by the Heads of States of the two nations in November 2012 was already approved by Kenyan parliament earlier. Ethiopia’s latest move now gives Kenya special access to the Ethiopian 90 million people economy in sectors which have been closed for foreign investors.

Approval of the 12 pages and 14 articles Special Status Agreement by the Ethiopian parliament coincided with the three days official visit of Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta and his business delegation to Ethiopia.

It was in March 1, 2012 that the former leaders of the two nations, the late Prime Minister Meles Zenawi of Ethiopia and President Mwai Kibaki of Kenya have agreed on the need of Special Status Agreement.

Facilitation of investments on selected sectors, facilitation of trade, infrastructure development between the two nations, establishment of economic development corridors and formation of joint private investment council are some of the cooperation areas listed the Special Status Agreement.

After completing the legal process of the parliament the law is expected to be published in Negarit Gazet of Ethiopia to be fully operational.

For more you can download the full document of the Special Status Agreement between Kenya and Ethiopia, which will soon be implemented.
