Yemen: Migrants Held at ‘Torture Camps’

(Sanaa) –Traffickers in Yemen hold African migrants in detention camps, torturing them to extort payment from their families, with the complicity of local officials, Human Rights Watch said in a report released today. Sometimes the torture ends in death. The Yemeni government should vigorously investigate and prosecute human traffickers and members of the security forces involved in the abuses.

The 82-page report, “‘Yemen’s Torture Camps’: Abuse of Migrants by Human Traffickers in a Climate of Impunity,”documents harms suffered by migrants, most from the Horn of Africa, who try to travel through Yemen on their way to Saudi Arabia for work. Human Rights Watch found that various Yemeni security agencies in the border town of Haradh, where dozens of camps exist, and at checkpoints, allow the human trafficking industry to flourish with little government interference.

Amazon has been pro-goat since last year, when Amazon Japan formed its own “weeding corps” of 30 to 40 goats, each with its own personal Amazon employee ID to work on the lawn outside the company’s distribution center. Goats and Amazon are a natural pairing because the company is based in Seattle, a city known for its state department-funded goat browsing on public underbrush. Goats can go places heavy farm machinery can’t, are cheaper than their human counterparts and leave a smaller carbon footprint. In fact, their hoofprints are cloven.

The Amazonian goats of Seattle are owned by Tammy Dunakin of Rent-a-Ruminant on nearby Vashon Island. Dunakin is prominent in goat-mowing circles, having appeared in a Colbert Report segment titled “People Who Are Destroying America: Landscaping Goats.” Stephen Colbert alleged that her operation was ruining the livelihoods of human landscapers. “I will not be satisfied until goats are doing all the landscaping jobs in this country,” she joked to his correspondent.

Dunakin, 53, has cropped brown hair, pale blue eyes and, on her pickup, bumper stickers that say, “THE VOICES IN MY HEAD TELL ME TO BUY MORE GOATS” and “I SUFFER FROM MULTIPLE GOAT SYNDROME (CUZ ONE GOAT IS NEVER ENOUGH).” While talking goat, she sways to and fro, perhaps because she’s constantly being nuzzled. The moment we enter her pasture, I’m greeted by a horned and bearded buck named Ernie and his brown- and black-striped buddy, Franz. The rest of the herd surrounds us, heads rubbing against our coats. “They give great massage,” Dunakin tells me.

The Nairobi County government shut down the Chongqing Chinese Restaurant, after The Daily Nation first published a story this week about the establishment’s controversial policy barring black people after 5pm. The restaurant claims it was necessary following a robbery in 2013. “Unfortunately, some of the measures were inappropriate, we sincerely apologise for this,” the management said in a statement.
An investigation revealed that the establishment did not have a liquor licence, a health licence and a change-of-use licence — having been converted from a residential house to a restaurant. Consequently, the Nairobi County government temporarily shut it down until management complies

ባለፉት ዓመታት በሕገወጥ መንገድ የያዙ ባለይዞታዎችን ሕጋዊ የማድረግ ሐሳብ ሲያወዛግብ ቆይቷል፡፡ ሒደቱን የሚቃወሙ ባለሙያዎች እንደሚሉት፣ ይህ አሠራር ሕጋዊ ነዋሪዎችን ወደ ሕገወጥ ተግባር የሚገፋፋና አድሏዊ ነው፡፡ እነዚህ የመሬት ሥሪት ባለሙያዎች ምክንያታቸውን ሲያስረዱ፣ የከተማው አስተዳደር ውሳኔ ሕጋዊ የሆኑትን ነዋሪዎች የማያበረታታና በአንፃሩ ሕገወጥነትን የሚደግፍ ነው የሚል ነው፡፡
ይህንን የባሙያዎች አስተሳሰብ ግን መመርያው አይቀበለውም፡፡ ቀደም ሲል ከሪፖርተር ጋር ቃለ ምልልስ ያደረጉት የከተማ ልማት፣ ቤቶችና ኮንስትራክሽን ሚኒስትሩ አቶ መኩሪያ ኃይሌም ከዚህ ሐሳብ ጋር እንደማይስማሙ መግለጻቸው ይታወሳል፡፡ መመርያው እንደሚለው ሕገወጦችን ሕጋዊ የማድረግ ሒደቱ በከተማው የተንሰራፋውን ሕወገጥ የመሬት ይዞታና ግንባታን ከመሠረቱ ይገታል፡፡ ከአድሏዊ አሠራርና ከሙስና የፀዳ፣ ሕግን የተከተለ፣ የሕዝብና የመንግሥትን ጥቅምና ፍላጎት የሚያስቀድም ነው ብለዋል፡፡ ሕገወጦችን ሕጋዊ የማድረግ ሒደት ምናልባት ከዚህ ቀደም መሬት ላልወረሰው ሰው የሚያስተላልፈው መልዕክት ምንድነው? የሚል ጥያቄ ለአቶ መኩሪያ ቀርቦላቸው ነበር፡፡
አቶ መኩሪያ ሲያብራሩም፣ ‹‹በሕገወጥ መንገድ መሬት የያዙ ሰዎች ይዞታውን በነፃ አያገኙም፡፡ ከፍለው ነው የሚያገኙት፡፡ ሁለተኛው በቀጥታ ወደ ሊዝ ሥርዓት ይገባሉ፡፡ ሦስተኛ የኪራይ ድልድል ባልናቸው ዕድሎች ተጠቃሚ አይሆኑም፡፡ ማለትም በኮንዶሚኒየም ፕሮግራሞች (10/90፣ 20/80 እና 40/60) ተጠቃሚ አይሆኑም፡፡››

The Port of Assaba is located in the eastern African region at the coast of  Red Sea has been sold  to a private venture capitalist from Sada Araba who is known for financing and buying  mega projects though out the Arab world and Africa continent. The Oil tycoon Sheik Mohamud Al Alamuwdihahuhi was trialed by his recent purchase and promised a 10 years free port use for all Ethiopian business people who want to import agricultural products and export manufacturing products to the rest of the world. The ceremony was held at a private ship at port of Assab on Red Sea,  members of the royal families and guests were invited. 

During the ceremony the Sheik pointed out his interest to buy port of Messiwa and if the people of  Djibouti and government agrees, he wants to accurate the entire Red Sea coast including Djibouti and Somali and  will name the region Al Arabia.

This will be one of the few mega projects in Sheik’s wish list. Each region will have its own governor and   president and the late Ethiopian president Mengisitu Hailemariam may be the governing partner and president for this region.
